And I finally received my N8!
Well, actually it's me who wasted some time hesisating whether to get it, but once ordered, I must admit o2's service is superb.

Anyway, it's green. And I damn like it!
Really an attractive and pretty coating.. Very nice color, elegant and unique.. I was afraid it would turn childish as usually dark colors and silver are usually teh way to go.. But it's all new, fresh, and more appealing..

I got the Nokia N8 CP-503 leather bag.. I highly recommend it.. Elegant, protective, and practical.. It also has a some special material on the inside to wipe the N8's screen clean...

It's snapping time now I guess.. Catch you on the photos thread..
My poor Satio is waiting to get its ass kicked..

@ jj03 - im talking about software issues rather than hardware. I remember the K750i having a couple of bugs upon release but it was quickly sorted out thanks to SE. Sadly, branded phones didnt get the same update so quick meaning many unhappy customers.

@ false_morel - congrats on your new phone. Great isnt it ?

My Satio is now living a happy life servicing my best friend. He's over the moon with it. To me it was never a Nokia. The N8 is miles ahead of it.

A great phone indeed.. Excellent piece of hardware and could become a perfect phone with the upcoming Nokia update if they deliver what they promise of..

But right now, I'm just furious!!
I ordered my Nokia N8 by o2 online service.. o2 MyHandy phone..
This means it's similar to an installment payment plan, but it's rather a normal o2 contract..
I get the N8 without any sim card.. 49€ first payment, then 17.5€ for two years..
I end up with 469€ overall and over two years.. That's cheaper than getting it cash! Nice deal..

Anyway, the problem is it turned out that my N8 is branded!! And I thought I ordered an unbranded device.. Usually o2 Myhandy phones should be all free..
After some inquiries, I discovered that o2 are shipping two type of N8s, branded and unbranded..

It's about soft branding.. Nothing major.. Anyone could live with it.. Just some MMS and Internet configuration and some favorites in the browsers.. Could all be deleted..
The issue is, as with all branded phones, when Nokia releases their updates.
Unbranded ones could immediately be updated. Users with branded phones should wait for the operator's version of that update.. And here comes the pain.

o2 also have one the worst updates support.. One time it lasted ten months till they delivered teh update with some Nokia phone!! Unbranding isn't complicated, but I always find flashing a phone too risky.. It breaks the warranty, and if something goes wrong, I can't flash it back..
Hacking on the other hand shouldn't be of a major problem.. Sometimes they could fix hacked phones without noticing.

PS: Regarding the firmware version fo the N8, here's a complete list. 425 versions!!

Hi, pal!

Congrats on your new N8!

You can flash your phone with Phoenix at ease. I had to flash mine already. The Ovi Maps Beta 3.06 was causing me trouble (phone freezing) and I had to perform a hard reset, which I should have never done. After that, I´ve lost both Ovi Store, Search Widget and Ovi Maps altogether.

The solution for now is to reflash the firmware. A simple FW reinstall with Ovi Suite won´t do the trick (be advised - do not perform a hard reset on your N8). I needed to use navifirm in order to get the firmware files.

The only thing about it is that my anti-virus detects a suspicious file within the cracked Phoenix (you´ll need the cracked version of the app). I got it installed in an old machine of mine, in order to avoid any risk... After that, all went well.

If you´re planning to change your firmware, then you´ll might need to change your product code before it and then change it back to the original one after you perform the fw flashing, for warranty purposes.

BTW: what are the changes that your branded FW has? If they´re mild ones, like wallpapers and font colors, then you´d better not change anything... As for the FW updates, you´re correct. I had to perform a FW flash with my old XM 5800 that was stuck at FW 11... That´s the price you pay (or the price you don´t pay) when you get a carrier´s discount...

Flashing itself is just one easy task.. As easy as downloding an app from the Ovi Store..

Two points here:
- At the moment, it seems there is still no way to change the Poduct Code on the N8.
- Even if there were a way, or that NSS worked on N8, how could that not void the warranty..
If I send the phone to o2 sercive, they'd just know it has a different Code and FW than theirs..
Now, if I send the phone directly to Nokia Service, which I could, they control the IMEI where they'd know the relative FW and PC are changed..

Now, as far as regarding the relation of the PC and FW:
For each PC there is a dedicated FW.. One could change the FW alone, by flashing that is. But if the PC stays the same, when updating teh phone, it will install the updated FW related to this PC, not the original..
That's why it makes sense for someone intending to have Nokia's original FW, to change the PC as well. Otherwise, he'd be stucked with that FW, any updates or hard resets and the custom FW is back..

There are actually two options for me right now:
- There is a Nokia Service Center, an official Nokia partner, that could offer a FW flash and then overtake the warranty coverage as well.. That is I could only got to them for maintenance.. Not to o2 or to Nokia directly, nor any other Nokia shop.. Of course they take some charges for that flash.. Up to 40€ as I was informed.. Pretty good..
- I turn my phone back, and get an unbranded one from somewhere else.. This time though, I have to make sure it's unbranded before buying it.
And most probably I have just to pay cash this time..

BTW: what are the changes that your branded FW has? If they´re mild ones, like wallpapers and font colors, then you´d better not change anything...

It's called Soft-Branding.. Only some MMS and internet setting for o2.. Could be easily changed or deleted.. As well as o2 home page on the default browser, and some benchmarks of theirs.. It's nothing.. I don't get it why they need a custom FW for that..
But I suspect it could have to do with Voip setting.. I missed to check that. But now I'm using my Satio, am not willing to turn the N8 just to check this..

As for the FW updates, you´re correct. I had to perform a FW flash with my old XM 5800 that was stuck at FW 11... That´s the price you pay (or the price you don´t pay) when you get a carrier´s discount...

Yes.. Here comes the problems..
First, any update would be delayed.. And at certain point, o2 will stop to support it at all..

And for me, it's all important to get the updates asap since I'll be involved in developing for Symbian soon!

PS: BTW, I somehow failed to locate any standard file manager!! Could anyone confirm this?
Maybe, those with unbranded phones could list the standard apps that came with the phone?

Imagine I had to google this just to find out in what embarassing situation I put myself by asking this question!

Also, I remembered I came across this point by the ASS N8's review.. But all forgot about it.
But that Office folder is really stupid to be put there..

That empty button beside the "Cancel" one and this office folder are two stupid ideas!
For sure first thing to to put that folder out in the main menu.. Good thing Symbian is all customizable in this aspect.
But hoping next update in Feb would bring us some well done and finished UI.

And I still don't know what rests in that folder other than a file manager as I still lack time to "play with it". The time I should be customizing the N8 for first use I'm spending instead googling some other solutions ot my branding problem.
Anyway, tom I'll pay that Nokia shop a visit. If it worked for some 40€ then be it. I wont bother send it back and order another from Nokia or go search for unbranded green handsets..
I'll keep you updated.

BTW, for the interested, Symbian Foundation are keeping their online content till 17th this month free for download. After that they will close down all their sites including symbian.org and its sub-sites. Only symbiansigned.com would still remain functioning of course..

So you could download Symbian's PDK, PDT, and RnD prior to that date. As following that those would be offered as a payed DVD/USB package..

As to the source code and related stuff, Nokia promised to publish it later.. At least the core source..

ASS? You mean AllAboutSymbian? That's usually abbreviated AAS. Or maybe you don't like that site...
