Yeah its a common theme: nokia for style,
for substance. There have been several lengthy debates about it, and that seems to be the general consensus (at least here, on Esato). What do you think about nokias marketing strategy? Imo all it does is reinforce this viewpoint. Go onto their website, their newest handset is technically a very good handset, but they are trying to sell it on looks. Why dont they try to educate the customer? Then it would sell in buckets.

back to topic. how about another edge that Nokia has over SE. The support of memory slot. Nokia has announced that they going to support SD, the most widely used format.
SE on the other hand, to please sony, in fact put consumers secondary when it just support sony format. in addition, SE has intentionally crippled the slots in P900 and S700 so that it cannot take DuoPro.
most Nokia mid-high end phone supports memory slot including 6230 and all the symbian range.
seems like i hv presented so many points that Nokia has an (in fact a big) edge over SE. Havent read many serious points (backup by fact) that SE has an edge.

With regard to memory card support I am quite glad that SE choose Sony's memorystick. Memorystick support is very wide ranging and isn't just limited to Sony products, with the added advantage that Sony customers have a tendency to buy most, if not all, their technological needs from Sony if possible.
Nokia haven't exactly done the best of jobs in including memory support e.g. 6600, which required the battery to be taken out so as to swap cards over, not very convenient.
When talking of an 'edge' it is perhaps wise to remember that such a concept is hard to define because it ultimately rests on the opinions of customers. Most of Esato's members, for example, believe that SE has an edge over Nokia in terms of technology and no amount of Nokia advertising looks likely to chnage that opinion. On the other hand there are many people who believe Nokia to offer a good mixture of technology and value for money and regard SE as being over priced.
If we look at how SE have performed over the last few years we see a pattern of gradually increasing their range of products, with a particular emphasis on mid-range to high-end mobiles. As SE are allowed more time to develop I think that we shall start to see a widening of their range to include the low-end market with more affordable handsets.
These things don't happen overnight, they take time. SE are not a serious threat to Nokia at the moment, but they can capitalise on any damage done by other manufacturers i.e. Samsung. With competition in the market being so fierce each manufacturer needs to find their own particular niche; Samsung are known for their clamshells for instance. SE need to create their own niche, they need to find that particular corner of the market that they can dominate, not just compete in, but dominate.

i have noticed that over the last year or so se have as a company made a good profit and contiue to do so i expect the results on the 14th will confirm this i also noticed that se are starting to offer more of a choice look at the s700 for the money you can have a good camera phone or a smart phone the z600 a good clam shell off the t610 se are starting to be noticed in the market place but they still need more models to offer choice

On ur point on SE finding a niche, I'm not so sure this niche exists in mobile phone. Every manufacturer seems to want to fight in every niche. Look at Samsung, which just announced the E500 which has 1.3MP and BT.
I think I mentioned this before. SE growth was very good when Nokia was at its worst. It will be interesting to see what growth will be like when Nokia gets back on its feet. We'll know in the next few quarters as Nokia been aggressive in price cuts and launching many new interesting models.

I think the reason SE did'nt include a memory stick slot on the K700i is because it allows room for them to grow in a future model. Same with why SE did'nt include a 1.3MP camera on the P910

Opinions from other members would useful on this topic so we can estimate how much of a problem this actually is.
I have just read a review of the F500 today and the reviewer was most impressed by, what he said was, an entry level SE mobile. It will be interesting to see how well the F500 (and the K500) do as entry level mobiles.

All you need is a memory card reader to use the sony memorystick in your pc, and exactly the same is true of the Nokia memory card, there is practically no difference. IMO the Sony is better because you can hot-swap it. So i would have to say
has the edge over nokia in the mmc department.
