Think an AX would be a good first car... fairly modern, not the safest of cars but probably the safest you'd get for the money. And if you can get one with fairly low mileage, not much should go wrong - however you might consider getting an AA Warranty just in case (although not sure I'd bother - if anything serious goes wrong just get rid of it!)
When you're finished with it, get a Lupo!

Having been in several AX's including a Saxo VTS engined 120BHP brownpantsmobile, id advise against them for one reason only: A sparrows fart from 12 feet could dent the bodywork (completely Aluminium on most AXs, not majorly safe)
Only redeeming feature f the AX is that it can do 75mpg (in diesel form anyway)
As for insurance, my mate Hannah (fit) has just bought herself a T reg Saxo 1.1, and is paying 750 quid fully comp on her own policy, and shes 18! All my female mates have got cheap insurance, as theyre not branded under the "Im a new bloke driver, im gonna drive like a cunt" stereotype. So i wouldnt worry about insurance too much.
As for cars, Phase 2 Clios are good, although 1.1s have all the acceleration of a JCB with flats. 1.3 is quite nippy.
Festas are good too, parts everywhere, cheaper than Lidl too.
What about a Mini?
