The S, P, and U are part of their NXT series, which I'd presume are intended to, at least stylistically, be a "flagship" line of sorts. This is in contrast to other international-market Xperia devices such as the Sola and the Ion.
The SX and GX are Japanese-market devices. They like their funky names.
No clue about the SS.
