Sony To Release New Bootloaders That Allow Devices To Boot From Recovery, Making Custom ROM Development Much Easier
Sony has recently been among the friendlier companies for custom ROM developers, but their devices still had a major hitch. They could not be booted from recovery, which meant third-party software had to modify the build system and if things went wrong, it was a lot more difficult to fix. To address this issue, Sony will begin releasing new bootloaders to allow booting from recovery.
This was first reported at FXP, home to developers who work exclusively with Sony devices to bring custom ROMs like CyanogenMod to end users. Official word should be coming soon, but the software is available to flash right now. If you plug in a compatible device and use Sony's official flash tool, you will see a bootloader upgrade available with the name "open devices."
Which devices are compatible? For now, just those with Cortex-A7 processors. Those are:
Xperia T2 Ultra
Xperia T3
Xperia M2
Xperia E3
More devices are expected soon, so don't panic if it doesn't yet apply to you. Remember that Sony hasn't even publicly discussed this, so they are probably hard at work to get a larger portion of their product line on board.
Once updated with the new bootloader, recoveries will work as they do on other devices. They will exist independently of the ROM and will be able to be used to install new operating systems and updates. This will be very big news to owners of Sony phones and tablets who like to flash custom software, as the process will soon become simplified and more developers will support Sony hardware.
If what I understand is correct, this will also mean an easier way to root without the need to unlock the boot loader which will be great, as those who doesn't want to loose DRM keys for rooting, and those with un-unlockable (carrier locked) won't have to wait months for a way to root without unlocking

And about 70D - time to upgrade your gear - i can say that 5D III raw quality is very good
RAW shooting with a mobile phone will end up with extremely grainy pictures from ISO800 or even at lower ISO..
As for the manual control, that's something I can definitely understand.
Anyway you indirectly said you need premium gear to be able to enjoy RAW at its fullest.

Well the HTC M9 has RAW support now and it looks terrible in most scenarios. Having all the manual controls and the RAW support is a good option to have but 95% of users want to take a quick snap so the superior auto needs to be much better. It needs to be smart and fast. People argue that the the Z3 is capable of taking the best pictures but that quality is not accessible to the average user.
One thing that I have noticed is that even though Sony have the highest MP count from the Xperia Z to date, it hasn't really helped them build their sales or imaging reputation. Samsung have taken the crown of best camera with a lower MP count, Apple too. That should be a lesson to Sony, pick the best sensor in terms of quality and not marketing.

RAW means nothing if you have a weak sensor/lens combo... ya, you might be able to improve an already bad IQ,,but not by much.

I've been saying for ages now how I hate companies that get involved in the race for the thinnest smartphone on the market, I'd much rather a thicker smartphone any day as it will allow for a much larger battery and improved camera tech. Yes it's more bulky and will probably add weight but again I prefer a phone with a little bit of weight to it.
Which would you rather have?
1. Lightest and thinnest smartphone on the market.
OR
2. Slightly heavier and thicker but with market leading battery performance and a top notch camera.

I would take a slightly thicker phone with an awesome camera and larger battery. It's about time Sony take back its title as the best camera phone maker. My K750i was awesome. I came to love Sony mostly because of its awesome camera. So hell yeah, if slightly thicker phone can make the best camera phone then 1000 times yes, yes, yes.
