Barring any further disappointments, by this time tomorrow, I should have my Nokia 9500.

Its a few days late, but its still a great birthday gift for me - even if I am giving it myself

Hi dudes! Good to see the whole house talking again. I am thinking of going to PP Plus too. Is the 5,000 deposit your airtime credit then? And I really want to know how quickly U used up a N500 when browing the (real) internet with a PC using ur phone as a modem. Is it fast? Is it affordable?

@cool: No; the deposit is a security deposit and credit ceiling. it is not used. You simply start talking/browsing, and when you use up to that amount, the system cuts you off and you need to put some funds in to be able to make calls, send SMS and use GPRS again. The point of the deposit is, if you use up some funds and decide to disappear or terminate the contract, whatever you have used is deducted from that deposit and the balance refunded. its a safeguard against people making unlimited use and running away.

Using my PC, I usually turn off images and access only low bandwidth sites. The issue of affordability depends on how you use it and what you use it for. if you do a lot of heavy downloading, you will soon burn holes in your pocket.

I consider myself a power user: constantly running 4 POP mail accounts, carrying out online payments, checking clients' sites, uploading/publishing files, and posting on forums. On a very heavy day, I can use up N500 in 24 hours. on a 'regular' day, I may not spend more than N100 on GPRS.

Hope that helps.

@AYA: Quite strange that people would be using GPRS to surf the internet on their desktop's. Do you guys have any broadband service? This message was posted from a K700i

@brix: The problem seems to revolve around cost and QOS. Broadband services here are exhorbitant, both setup and maintenance wise, and then the performance is often not as expected.

Another issue (which is somewhat contributing to cost is coverage). Many providers have refused to invest in infrastructure to extend their reach. As such prospective users are compelled to invest in acquiring masts and all that in order to be able to enjoy services. Its madness, really.

Some fixed wireless providers offer internet access via CDMA, but my friend, even my GPRS connection is more reliable than most. I used one for a time and eventually ditched it out of frustration.

Seeing cost of acquisition of GPRS phones and the service is more manageable, more people are looking in that direction today.

@AYA: Talking of CDMA a couple of months ago Qualcomm and Ericsson were here trying to sell CDMA2000 and CDMA Evo. This message was posted from a K700i
