Sony Mobile only sold 0.6 million units this quarter. I guess Xperia 1 are not enough.

Make the Xperia 1 launch at £600 and Xperia 5 £400 then they'll sell millions. No more mid range trash. The OnePlus way is best for them.

Few months later prices drop and sales do not get better.
It means less people are interested.
Price is not excuse.
If I cannot pay $950, all I need to do is wait until it drops to 700 , 600 ....

Here android flagships come in march and april for more than 4000.
In november they are almost 50% cheaper.

This is from reddit :

" At IFA I had a brief chat with a person from sony. He told me the next Xperia flagship is in between concept and blueprint but it will be the successor of X1 will support 5G with SD865 for sure. Not much about camera spec seems finalized but don’t expect too much for hardware improvement. He says rather than camera hardware they will focus on more “film-geeky” new software feature to attract film enthusiasts, just like Cinema Pro."

They sold 600k in a quarter. That's perfectly fine for basically a niche product. Sony isn't gonna win the mass market game and I don't think they are trying to anymore. They don't market their phones like a company trying to appeal to the mass market and don't price them accordingly either.

Price is an issue because it turns people off when they launch.. a time when people are looking to upgrade. Instead they go for something else that's cheaper or offers more. But more importantly, it's just the power of Samsung and Apple brand power and the cheapness of Chinese oems.

1. Xperia X1 is an old phone that has nothing to do with Xperia 1
2. Xperia 1 can definitely be compared to the latest Samsung or Apple. In fact, the Xperia is better - I see quite a bit of photos on social media from those phones and they definitely seem inferior to Xperia.

1. Yeah... the moniker X1 is normally associated to Sony Ericsson Xperia 1 (SEX1) and I love that phone. I should use Xperia 1 to differentiate from SEX1.

2. I think, it should be comparable. I think the Sony Alpha team has done good job here.

Profits for mobile sensors = +59% (Q3)
More sensors used = more 💰= xperia 💓

Mobile earned less money than Q2, but costs were lower too.
They kind remain at Zero.

Samsung is ditching the 1.4um sensor, Huawei already has huge sensors, Apple just kicked the butt of Pixel in processing. If manual video was that important LG would have been counting their billions by now. If they keep the hardware without even a tof they'll loose their relevance once again.

0.6 million is pretty low. I wonder how they'll reach their already lowered forecast of 4mils. But at least they didn't lose in operating costs. Also does this unit sales mean 10 series sold better? It probably includes XZ2-3 too but still.

Price is definitely an issue. Yes they get discounts but it's not like the competition stay at the same price. Heck S10 probably got price cuts before 1 arrived. But Sony rather give $200 worth of freebies than price their phone at $600. I think it's because of their desire to stay a "premium brand". I kinda wish Sony made a new brand like realme or something

Cinema Pro is much more friendly than just manual settings.
There is whole UI, the Luts etc ...
To me , it looks easier to use than manual setting from regular app.

Dont buy the story that those sub-$500 flagships have 5-10% profits.
No business can handle this.
Flagship from Honor probably costs half or less to be made compared to P/Mate series ....

Remember that Oppo Find X was released for $1000.
More than X1, S10+, G8 and P30.
Vivo too have had devices above $600 in past few years.

Sony cant trust they can keep improving with same hardware for years.
They need to remember that newer/better hardware can bring better results.

From weibo : " The IMX563 specification is unremarkable, and the 1.6μm PD is not too big. Just made a Pixel level Cu-Cu link, also DBI Hybrid Bonding. It is a Gen5 technology that is more difficult to implement than Gen6 (3 layers of DBI HB peripherals). "

It is 1.4 instead of 1.6 .... Anyway , I think it is X5 camera.

Doesn't really matter if it's more than manual settings, I've yet to see someone using it as a film camera. Besides, if they are serious about video they should at least upgrade the OIS and give better stabilization. Sony has sharpness going for it and it'd come handy using it with a gimbal but for those who want better stabilization without an external tool, they should offer it in regular camera settings.

Price could be anything, but they should make people believe that price is right for what they are getting. Sony can't do this, especially in midrange segment.

Sony used to use their sensors in multiple generations, they don't have the luxury this time imo. They caught up to the industry just when it's moving towards bigger sensors. Have you seen the 108MP module next to a 12MP. That looked insane. It is time for Sony to have huge curved sensors with simple lens design so it'll have great image quality without protrusion. Or if they want to stay less costly, enlarge the sensor. Midrange 48MP uses 1/2" now. If nothing, they should ugrade OIS and use Exmor for all focal lengths. A more capable front cam could also be cool.

I read that phonearena article, it's suspicious that they only used portrait mode in low light. Samsung is garbage, yet they still have nice things to say. Only if it was a Sony... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM0v4Q6Iz8I here's a random comparison. 11 does better imo, pixel is great but 4 is not as exciting as previous gens were. If we take random content seriously, then that Japanese video showed 5 beat 11. Regardless, 11 gets praise for its video capabilities from everyone. Sony should one up all these. They have the resources.

EIS can be fixed.
OIS is all the same.

Sony has been busy with FF sensors lately.
No new mobile exmor beside the ones of iphones and X5.
I have no idea if they plan to focus on QB sensors.

That sensor used by Nokia 808 is almost 3,6x larger than 1/2.6" ....
85,36mm2 while 1/2.6" has about 24mm2...

Look at Motorola Razr Flex : https://www.mobielkopen.net/beelden-opvouwbare-motorola-razr

This is the flex phone the other should have done , instead of those failures.
