if that's the case going forward, that's even more sad!

Maybe I need to get the m5 as an upgrade. I was really hoping the M6 would be what replaces my m2, but no 4k and 21:9 really sucks.

I think Sony has their way of doing things as well as design (They almost always never fail). Lets put some faith in them.

Sony works hard to make 5 and 10 worse than previous ➡️ both sell less than previous ➡️ sony thinks how they can turn this around ➡️ ruining 1 series

What intrigues me is the width of the device. Current 1 is on the limit of being one hand device but if I was to assume people couldn't care less if they have to use both hands to use a phone anyway. So now maybe Sony can benefit from it and become more general device in terms of ergonomics and go back to the days of XA2 Plus. I expect width to be around 75mm cause it would make zero sense to just shorten the device.

I could be done by increase screen 0.2", while reducing top/bottom. No need to downgrade screen. If proce was main issue, then just buy from another supplier.

Alleged physical dimension in mm
162 × 74.4 × 8.45

So this is XA2 Plus size after all. What they did was clever, they've retained current 1V 21:9 display real estate and just added extra width to it. Now I can for sure say this panel is a slight variation of QHD+ found on S24+, they just regrouped the bezels to top and bottom and made side bezels pretty much nonexistant and that alone has saved them 1.5mm of width compared to S24+. But the device is still super tall like every 1 before it.

I've mostly enjoyed what Sony have produced. But losing the form factor and 4k is big, imo. I enjoy watching movies on my phone when traveling and the experience is noticeable compared to a 2k phone.

if they do something special to make up for it, maybe it won't matter. but i really doubt it. sony phones have been niche market phones for years now and if they are taking away two things that cater to that niche market, that's a poor decision in my book.

will wait and see. i would prefer NOT to get a galaxy or pixel.. but at some point, i will need to upgrade. my m2 is working fine right now, but i do have a dead pixel on my camera sensor

Looking at the mockup comparison renders its the exact same phone but with a tad bit ruined aesthetics and ergonomics. Had they incorporated iPhone like flat frame they could have shaved off another 1.5mm of width for sure.

Anyway, Sony only has themselves to blame for not selling enough of total units to justify investing into new gen 21:9 4K panel. Again, if I was to guess its the 5 series that takes the blame for being a total flop. Shame that Sony board doesn't see Xperia 1 as a true showcase flagship product of Sony's cutting edge technologies combined into one. If they had such vision they would have subsidized the phone as much as they could; ie for starters they would have SSSG sell them any sensor they want for manufacturing price

Even if Sony electronics could get exmor for factory price, highly doubt it would make much difference.
For the amount of exmor sony sells, revenue is not big. Selling electronics bring more revenue (but less profit) than exmor.

sometimes even samsung avoid samsung semicon products for the price. S24 has storage from micron.

About AI, is it something sony developed alone, or collaborated with other, like qualcomm?
