If this is a hardware defect then any quality control Sony mobile had/has just went out the windows since this right side blur defect seems to be showing up too often to be a minor error/defect. The only way to fix this would be a full replacement of the device unless Sony feels they are up to the challenge to just replace the lens somehow.
I do hope this isn't a sensor problem/defect since that would definitely need a full replacement of the device.
I seriously hope it is a software issue/algorithm which can be fixed with a FW update, possibly this supposed update that is meant to come soon.
Now I am hesitant to go and buy the phone tomorrow :/

@tyko some times you will get soft corners on wide lenses (unless you have a lens that cost as much as the xperia z1 itself)
it's a know issue with wide lenses.
but then again it applies only to the corners and not to the whole right frame.

I'll do some testing when i get my Z1 tomorrow. See if i can reproduce the blur somehow and narrow down IF and WHEN it does occur. Of course, if it's NOT always there, then it can't be a hardware issue.. so it must be sofwtare based on the specific situation. But, if it's always there in the same area of the frame, then clearly it is hardware. Sony should honor a full replacement with zero cost to the consumer (shipping and/or otherwise)

Can you try and take a photo of two identical objects standing left and right in the picture frame. And you shouldn't be standing to close to the objects either.

^good point tyko. to attempt to reproduce this blur, you should stick to wide angle shots. close up/macro shots will create a bokeh effect and mask the right side blur. You'll need to try a wide angle shot with a center focus. focal point should be a far off object, not something close to you.

Honestly, I am not too worried about this. even if a firmware update will not address this the z1 might not be an extremely amazing camera, but it takes really great pictures, and I think the camera even as it is now is capable of taking wonderful pictures.
I feel like many peoples expectations are set really high, we should just enjoy this phone, because nobody is forced to buy it, even though I understand that some people are disappointed, it still is a very good device from what I see and hear.

I was out tonight at a football match and two friends of mine (One had an S4 and the other had a Z1) they both took pictures and the S4 took the better pictures even though it was in low light.

The verge is working on its z1 review and guess who is reviewing it? VLAD -_-
from his initial feedback about the camera he likes what it can do but then he thinks at times the software lets it down with autofocus and exposure issues etc.
It was on the verge mobile show

monkeypantz - no doubt i will love my Z1. but a defective part is a defective part and it should be addressed. if it is the way it is, then of course.. i bought it, so i will love it. but just like anything else, i want it to be defect free.
of course, we don't know if this is a hardware defect or not. need to run my own tests. i can't get my Z1 fast enough!
@northmonkey - sometimes i wonder why you still come to this thread..

@ Moogoo I compleltly agree if its defective for sure.
I for myself am a bit disappointed that the camera isn't as amazing as Sony praised it would be. Especially because this is my first none Apple smartphone, and the first time with an android. To convince my partner to make the switch I was mentioning all the time how good the camera is as this is the only thing that matteres to us + having two phones in sync using icloud, which hopefully we will be able to do on android ( photostream, calander, contacts, apps etc. )
Other than that I am looking forward to the phone.
