You are not getting it, because the bottomline is picture quality, and 1020 takes considerably worse pictures than 808.
I would agree considering the samples I have seen... however I am trying to hold out hope on two counts;
1- The pictures we've seen so far are from a pre-launch device and maybe they'll improve firmware before launch.
2- I was never really impressed with the promo photos from the 808 like the beach scene and the mountain climbers... i have taken many a photos that IMO surpass the quality of those images... and if they take care of #1, #2 should hopefully provide me enough justification to take a chance.
only time will tell, I could be singing a whole new tune next week....

I keep going back and forth...
I'm going to get it... I want a WP8 device
I'm not getting one... because I don't want my pictures to go down in quality
I'm going to get it... because I like having the newest Nokia out
I'm not getting one... because I enjoy having my unlimited data, text and voice for 45USD/mo (which I lose if I get a "smart" phone per at&t)
I'm going to get it... because I'm exited they finally have full manual controls built in (not just manual iso)
I'm not getting one... because there is no removable battery
I'm going to get it... because they have a camera grip available with built in extra power.
I'm not getting one... because I actually LIKE Symbian
I'm going to get it... because Symbian is like NEVER updated with ANY apps
I'm not getting one... because it's not out out yet and in my hand tempting me to just BUY IT
and then there is the color... my last few phones have been white, so do I get the red or yellow..... such decisions....
*AT&T now has a 1020 page

You and I are in an almost identical situation..
I think as soon as saw the first sample from the 808 I knew that it had tons of potential in terms of IQ.. it was pretty obvious. I don't feel the same with the 1020, and considering that I do enjoy my unlimited AT&T data... its really hard to justify signing a new 2 year contract for the 1020.
I think I will wait it out and get the next gen.. the 1020 still feels like its not the best Nokia can do with the current tech they have. Waiting until Mid/late 2014 will be the smarter thing to do.. at least in my humble opinion.

I thought most of the 808's official sample shots looked phenomenal.
Have a look at this

So far none of the 1020's shots have impressed me even a little bit.

i was always very impressed with the 808 photos.. not so much with the 1020 photos.
not interested in either as my phone, but it's sad to see nokia didn't really improve on something as great as 808

Is Nokia using a Sony sensor ? I am starting to think that it might be the honami sensor cut into smaller pixels..
