mono is short for mononucleosis--also called the "kissing disease" by many teens.
I think it's considered a sexually transmitted disease because its spread by saliva (its in the herpes virus family, to be specific it's the epstein-barr virus). It's like a bad cold with the possibility of jaundice and enlarged speel thrown in.
it's rarely fatal, but it can sometimes cause rupture of the spleen
