No two Golfs are the same, but they generally have the same issues, especially if you've grown up driving Japanese cars. One thing I like about the Golfs is that they're so damn customisable. That 1.8 model will become a collectors item should they discontinue it which won't happen soon.
On the safety aspect, just bare in mind that a Citi won't go near an NCAP test coz it will fail dismally...Speed+Citi Golf+Stationary Object=one-way trip to the morgue:(
