Not surprised, it was expecting with the weather sealing, something had to take a hit, and the benchmarks was it.

Sony is playing the name change game. There won't be a Z4 phone. The three flagships in fall will be the Z5 lineup.

Mediatek is only catching up. more core doesn't mean it's better. look at AMD for example. Mediatek still has graphics department to catch up and they are trying hard to do that
we shall see when DX12 join the party with low-level api

Apple got camera engineer from Nokia, mostly.

What Apple has, is money.
They're so cash-rich that they can quite literally buy everything they want or need. They want a camera engineer, they'll just pay more than any other company is willing or capable of offering. Job done.
That and their brand is the strongest in the world right now. Its almost impossible to go to a major (or even minor) city in the world and find someone who doesn't know what Apple or the iPhone is.

I agree. At this very moment no one can challenge apple when it comes to Finances or probably on RND unless their would be a joint venture like JDI.
Truth be told, without android all the other major mobile companies are sh*t compared to apple.
Does anybody know what happened to this?
"New Sony Active Pixel Color Sampling
(APCS) sensor heading to a future
Xperia?"
or to the curved sensor.
Such a shame that Sony has so much potential.
Why not be the best in mobile cameras, put all their good tech there and charge premium for that. Be the apple for those who love quality on their mobile cameras (without it being chunky)

Please don't get me started on the curved sensor. Sony used it in the selfie cam, perhaps as a test run but at this moment nothing about it making to an xperia. There was talk about it heading to an xperia, either this was false or Sony changed their mind maybe due to yield issues, who knows. Sony patented a curved full frame sensor, and this was rumoured to go into the RX1 successor or maybe it will go into some other full frame dslr, be it mirrorless or an alpha A99 mark 2. But I feel these curved sensors could have yield issues.
As for the other sensor, it seems it was not slated for mobile but cameras at least for now. The info is from November of last year, so it's been a while, perhaps Sony is still working on it to bring it to commercial use.

For now we only know or believe a new sensor is slated for the Z5, so hopefully samples leak soon or at least some prototypes with the new sensor.

Sensors will be released when they can reproducibly fabricate them with sufficiently high yields. No doubt Seony have some of the best imaging sensor R&D in the world, but it takes time to get from the research labs and into mass production. People complaining about Sony using the same sensor in the Z-series till now, well they won't use a new one until its ready to be produced at a scale large enough to be put in a smartphone.
Same applies to their APS-C sensors and FF sensors. Reading some comments on SAR give me cancer, given how impatient people are. Sensors are put in bodies when the sensors are ready for mass fab.

AMD went for Mantle, but Mantle hasn't go anywhere yet except force M$ to release DX12 with demo on NVIDIA platform. DX12 means every one has the same start point, so that won't change too much

I hate that sony camera always tend to be blurry at the right corners
Z3+ front facing camera looks impressive!

Z3+ front camera is the reason for me to change from z1 to it.
