@Dude

I'm sorry mate but I'm all out of ideas on this one, maybe someone else has some (sensible!) suggestions? I hate to say it, but I think you might (and I mean, might) have been sold a duffer

I ahve been attempting to burn DVD+RW discs, but with little success. Using Nero I am unable to alter the write speed from 2.4x, but using this speed I get an error message saying 'Illegal Disc'. However, the other evening, for some reason, Nero burned a DVD+RW disc at 4x and it worked! It is back to 2.4x again and once again I have no option to change it.

Interestingly enough when I ran a utility to check the disc information it gives me two set of write speeds, the first one corresponds to the 2.4x speed and the second corresponds to the 4x speed. Could the second write speed be something to do with MODE SENSE? If so how do I activate MODE SENSE as the prefered system over the the system my drive is currently using?

The drive I'm using is a RICOH DVD+RW RW8165.

@scots: is it cheap media? Or is the media all at least 4x rated?

@Gigs

The media is 1x - 4x. One disc did burn successfully when the write speed was changed. I did manage to get the write speed changed to 4x earlier this evening although in a rather roundabout way. However, Nero then informed me that the current disc in the drive could only be written to at 2x and then promptly tried writing to it at 2.4x. There seemed to be no problem with writing to the successful disc at 4x.

The write strategy for the disc is 4x.

Well, to get the obvious stuff out of the way, have you cleaned the laser diode recently? Running a CD cleaning disk through a drive often sorts out many problems.

Nero does analyse the disk when you put it in the drive and limits it's settings according to what it *believes* the disk to be. As Gigs said, it could be that you have a duff batch of DVDs, I'd certainly buy one or two very good quality disks by a different manufacturer and try those just to see if it is a problem with the media.

If the above suggestions don't do the trick, it might be worth downloading a different burner such as roxio just for testing purposes. It is possible, although unlikely, that Nero has become corrupted in some way.

The other possibility, of course, is that the drive itself is on it's way out. How does it perform normally? Does it play music CDs or movie DVDs ok? Does installing software take a long time or sometimes fail? All of these could point again to a dirty laser diode or in the worst case scenario, a failing drive.

Being a firewall, it's main purpose is to block all network activity from programs that YOU haven't allowed. As such, updates are not as important as they are for, say, an antivirus program since YOU get to decide whether a program is legit or not. However, bug fixes and such like can be valuable and so I would suggest that you move over to ZoneAlarm, as long as you don't mind the occasional nag screen every now and then that is!
