Hey, i don't really agree with people saying the G900 is positioned as mid-range. Look at the specs vs. the P1, which is as far as i know considered high-end in the SE portfolio. Apart from screen size, keyboard layout and battery size, G900 outperforms or matches P1:

- 5MP camera (and apparently better cam interface, to be confirmed when reviews surface)
- same RAM
- same built-in memory
- same processor
- M2 mem stick compatibility
- media player same as W960 (at least, according to the G900 white paper)
- better video recording (QVGA at 30fps)
- wifi b+g (this seems to be confirmed in the WP)

It's also more pocketable. I've already kicked the W960 out of my wishlist, i'm getting the G900 when it's out.

while i agree with what your saying you have to realize that the p1i is already 6+months old. This may very well be the NEW mid-range.

They got Flash lite 3 so I guess Youtube should work out the box with the built-in Opera 8 browser.

mmm mid-range cause of the price. Possibly... Anyway, mid, low or high-end is all a matter of portfolio strategy and this in itself is quite subjective.

I noticed there'll be no bundled M2 card, which i find a good thing somehow. I mean, if they bundle a 512MB or even a 1GB card, i'll probably buy a 4 or 8GB anyway, and the 1GB one will become useless. Better to have the phone for less and then upgrade it as you wish. The bundled headphones are the HPM-62, which is utter crap, but again it's ok for those who already have good headphones and who don't want to get their 17th HPM-70...

Re. the processor, sorry i thought it was the same, now i realize it's ARM9 vs. AARM9 for P1, thought it was a typo in the WP. But the clock speed is still the same (208MHz), so i don't expect it'll be any faster. Does anyone know the difference between those 2 chips?

I have a P1 and even with the latest firmware you still have to open all apps firts time to get them "instant" the next time. Otherwise there is always a delay.

Mhm. Horrible, isn't it. Not like s60, where it's "instant" (read: two seconds). And where you don't have to manually close programs all the time.
And why are you comparing N80? That came out years ago. P1 was only out last year lol. But I suppose you illustrated how behind SE is in that respect.

lol. I thought it was bad enough when you just invented things about the phones. But it's definitively more irritating when you make up things others didn't say to argue against.. So long. *wave*

Well, I get all the critisicms but I think SE has really pulled out the stops on this one. We can see the influence of iphone. 1st, in the "finger" touch screen functions. 2nd, in the lack of HSDPA

This phone also trumps the N series by inlcuding touch screen input, although N series have better connectivity.

But overall I really like the g series (esp. the G900). The formfactor is ideal.
Candybar with Dpad, touchscreen with finger touch UI features, K800 size, better Camera UI (than usual uiq fare).

For years I have not really been attracted to P series (despite liking the phones) because they have the jog dial, which is completely and utterly designed for RIGHT HANDERS (Not even Ned Flanders left handed emporium can help out there). Since I am a left hander, I much prefer the neutral 5 way joy or dpad navigation.

I think the G series have achieved a landmark in SE mobile phone direction. We will now see the touchscreen spread across more of the SE range. We also see the recognition by SE of the appeal of candybar and slider phones like the N series.

I agree. For once they seem to have recognised where in the market their phones actually are, with the hardware and the software limitations they have. And then they expanded on that.

Obviously, I think it's unforgivable that they didn't manage to raise the bar on the UIQ phones now and include things like svg tiny 1.2 apis - which would have helped immensely with using the hardware already on the damned phones. But launching these phones now, utilising SE's slowly (slowly) but finally maturing utilisation of the UIQ platform - as well as making the cleverphone market a little bigger, by including the mid- range both with thought about price, and with the program suite - that is a very sound and well thought out business- decision, it seems to me.

I'm only hoping that that actually translates into some more serious effort on the smartphone- development over at SE.. (Wouldn't put it past them to simply start developing more closed and tied off software solutions, though. And then disregard the entire point with having an open platform and a good developer- community, and how increasing the options for making good applications for the phone might actually increase the sale. You know, believing that if it just says SE on every piece of software, that translates into people buying another SE phone - rather than throwing it away in disgust.)
