I update my k700i few minutes ago, and it woks very good. I think all the bugs that annoy me are solve.

I agree, its much more reliable on R2L and I have yet to find a problem in the week I have been using R2L though I haven't use my HBH-600 headset much in the last week so keen to try that more soon

I haven't heard of anyone making a paper weight out of the K700 yet and I am sure part of the reason its been offline for so long is because

have been refining the process, and don't forget people have been using a similar process since early in the year for updating P900s

i dont exactly have the desk cradle and one of those dc22 cables but a compatible usb cable that connects to the phone, should that be a problem ?

As far as I know one has to have the proper sync station to upgrade one's firmware online.

The online updater from SE works like a charm. I'm happy now, because I won't have to make the trip to the dealer to get this done.
You NEED the cradle. Borrow from someone who has the P900, like I did... Make sure the drivers are installed correctly, or you will get "fatal error"

Do you have all the hardware and software installed? My officemate got his error because his K700 is not in DSS-20 or DSS-25.
