noticed that the R1EJ001 software is:-
Camera SW versions
Camera
Current: 2.5
Video call camera
Current: 2.3
while my R1eED001 is:-
Camera SW versions
Camera
Current: 3.2
Video call camera
Current: 2.9
is the newer version a downgrade?

A few questions:
1. Do you mean you have R1ED001 firmware (not R1eED001?)
2. I assume you have read this information from the service menu (>*3. What region do you come from?
All R1ED001 phones I have ever seen have Camera: 2.5 & Videocall camera: 2.3 .

I am on O2 UK, R1ED, but my camera software is only 2.4, not 2.5 as stated in the first post.

Hi Phoenix : my date is 6W23. Still got no sensible answer to this from SE except that they state that my operator has customized the phone and there is no branded firmware update available. Odd really because this is an unbranded phone with no operator customizations that I know of.

After weeks of watching this thread every day for the unbranded update, I finally decided stop my 'obsession' and upgraded via Wotan. At 7 euros it was cheap, quick and simple.
It then took me 2 hours to put back my settings (plus pictures, themes, email settings, bookmarks and the sky+ app). Much less than the time I have spent reading this thread and getting frustrated!!
It has finally solved the bluetooth connection issues I had with my Parrot ck3100 car kit, PLUS I have a bit of my life back!
