Huge mistake not having Hardware Image stabilisation. SteadyShot is great and all, but it can't compare to HIS. Having it would do so much for image quality, due to being able to support longer exposures in low-light scenes. It would also help massively with video.
Also a huge mistake of having such huge discrepancies with displays. I can understand if the two types were like the iPhones, where one has 1300:1 contrast and the other has 1000:1. But the Z1 appears to have one with 1500:1 and others with less than 700:1. That is too huge a discrepancy to be allowed. Who does the quality testing? Ridiculous.
Really hoping their next phone has higher quality screen batches. I don't want to see another case where some screens are less than half the quality of others. Ridiculous for a company toting its display prowess with Bravia.
I also hope the next phone has HIS for the sensor. Hopefully a larger one too if they can manage to fit into a reasonably sized handset. I also want them to stick to sub-5-inch. Somewhere between 4.7-5 would be best for ergonomics (e.g Moto X)
We shall see. I might end up waiting a little while yet again, and just seeing what I can get free on upgrade for the time being.

My source told me that Sony has about 1 million VA display that will be used on the Z1 and after that all the devices will be getting an AH-IPS or a S-PLS display.
Wouldn't that first million be the worldwide units in stock at suppliers now for the next 2 weeks? I'm wondering since my Handtech order is awaiting customs in Beijing and the inconsistent screens if it is worth waiting another month. BTW, on another note Clove charged me for a canceled order that did not ship and 8 days later I get a refund for $9 less due to currency fluctuation. Might want to keep this in mind of you decide to ship back for a refund.

I totally agree, people think I'm a troll but the facts are, Sony have messed around with the screens on the Z1 just like the Z, camera quality isn't as good as Sony make out and it's not going to get anywhere near the sales of the LG G2, S4, Note 3, HTC One or any other phone that is coming out right about now.
Very poor from Sony again, it seems they never learn from their mistakes, they should have learned from their mistakes with the Xperia Z.

i don't understand all the criticism on stabilization. i tend to turn it off if its there! moreover, watching the many many sample videos of the Z1 against its top competitors, the Z1 DESTROYS them all in almost every comparison as far as stabilization goes. These are phones with OIS, yet the Z1 is comparable if not BETTER. So, why are people bitching about the Z1's stabilization as if it's such a flaw, when they should be praising it for being so damn good and criticizing others with OIS for being so terrible? RIDDLE ME THAT..
Let me make note, i am NOT talking about the picture QUALITY. In low light, the Z1's video quality doesn't seem to be that great right now.. average at best. But in broad daylight, it looks pretty damn great to me. Just as good and often times better than its main competitors. I have seen many samples where it just looks like the Z1 is FLOATING, whereas shake/bounce is clearly evident in its competitor samples.
as far as screens go, contrast ratio can't be compared unless the same exact test is done on all screens. if you google contrast ratio, you'll find that there are many different contrast ratio tests and so scores can and do fluctuate. I'm not saying there aren't any quality check issues going on with screens, it certainly sounds like there is. just saying that simply comparing contrast ratios from different websites is not a conclusive test.

Sony already beat LG and HTC with the Xperia Z. Look up their quarterly results and profits. LG outshipped Sony but made less money because Sony sold high margin phones while LG only managed to sell mid/low end
Sony does need to improve but so does everyone else. Samsung is about to get a storm from XDA because of Knox, LG has the worst software support, HTC One had massive build quality problems, people literally exhanged their phones 3-4x until they got a good one

@northmonkey - what are we supposed to be noticing in that pic other than the difference in brightness? a description would be nice
@jubei - exactly. no company is perfect in every way. personally, i think Sony is doing the best to improve. software updates are much faster, developer relationship is very friendly, build quality and materials have improved, specs are up to date or exceeding the current flagship batch. i'd say those are very big improvements in just one year, especially after buying out ericsson. and it seems like it will only continue to get better.
sure, there is a screen issue and possibly a camera issue (e.g., right side blur), but these things will get ironed out. it's been what.. 3 weeks since announcement? 1.5 weeks since first stock in europe? clearly, there are gonna be issues and bugs and whatever. nobody is immune to that.. not samsung, not apple.. no one.
for some reason, people seem to give sony the worst criticism. perhaps because people simply expect better due to their history as providing premium quality products. *shrug*.

Just uploaded 4 new sets of pictures to my Flikr set. They're at the bottom. Please let me know what you think about this whole right side blur issue I'm having. Software or hardware problem? Honestly, I really don't know at this point. On the fence of wanting to just return it for a refund, but don't want to deal with the hassle and the extra unnecessary cost, as I really like this phone.

Hi guys.... I got my Z1 2 days back here in New Delhi, India....
And I have got the poor screen...
Even slight tilting the screen changes the contrast, blacks are not so deep and are grey at full brightness or when viewed from wide angles...
Camera is indeed a hit or a miss... Sometimes the pictures are great and sometimes poor...
Phone is superfast and games runs supersmooth... The phone turns hot quite quickly... Battery is not good as of now, maybe after few charges...
There is an update of 867.2 mb... I will be updating tonight...
I wish I had got the better screen... This one is almost like the Z one...

There are reasons people tend to call some posters troll. I will list some, which applies in most situations all over the internet (but sometimes sadly here in esato as well):
1) They tend to criticize Sony and only Sony, no other companies:
Every company messes something up or has a flaw (minor or major). No phone is perfect and that is why we have so many great choices. However, the negative posters usually just post the negative side about the Sony phones and only the positive side about the other phones. Are you even trying not to be so obviously biased? lol
2) They do not even intend to buy the phone, yet give terrible advice why not to buy it:
Many of these posters have claimed in, I don't even how many posts, that they like this phone. But because of some supposedly 'huge' flaw, they will not buy it and advise people to stay from it. I mean really? Z1 may not be perfect but its arguably one of the best phone on the market now. Let me tell you, it pretty easy to take any phone and find a flaw about it but its so stupid to try to convince people that that specific flaw in that sony phone will make your life miserable. Moreover, all these repetitive posts do not add anything to this thread, thus are either ignored or called out to be prejudiced.
3) They tend to pick up some small detail and try to create a huge fuss about it:
Oh mah gawd! Look at that screen over there! I cant make out the colors from a 180 degree angle even though I barely (like 0.01% of time) look from that angle. NOPE! not gonna buy it, even though it makes my photos look real pretty when I use logic to view my phone straight on about 99.99% of time. Since when did the 180 degree angle test become more important that a 0 degree angle test?
4) They also believe anything negative about Sony without seeing it in the first place:
Oh mah gawd! Look how [insert any negative adjective] that phone looks from that video, which I might be viewing from my shitty laptop display, while the video is compressed at playing at only potato resolution. NOPE! not gonna buy it again.
TBH I have yet to meet someone in real life who is acts like the above and hope I never meet anyone like that. Now if you see something up there that matches the description, you gotta ask yourself, why are you so biased against Sony? Don't tell me you are a critic for a critic does recognize and commend for the positives while most of these 'trolls' seem to be on a paid mission to discredit Sony phones everywhere.
