So the IFA Z5 is basically a Z3+ with different design and 4GB RAM? So no SD820, no new camera sensor, no fingerprintreader, no usb type C?!? I really hope it's not true.

^^If they want to show a new flagship at IFA they shouldn't ditch the Z4 name (all 2015 models are 4's, there's no reason to change it).

He didn't say no new camera sensor or no new fingerprint scanner so there's still hope. if the specs are the same as z3+ go die Sony

Sony could have used the SD820 but they decided to launch the Z5 at IFA instead of November, which means they will have to give up on S820 and go with S810 instead.

So yeah, basically the same story as last year. First and second half flagships use the same chip, with minor differences.

Wouldn't it be smarter to wait 2 months and get the 820, otherwise their new flagship will feel outdated in a very short time, especially given the 810's bad reputation?

I don't think Sony can afford to not make the next release a major upgrade. The Z3+ had made only minor ripples (if any at all) in the market. Another nothing update will kill Sony Mobile. They must know that. Surely. Right?

If they really want to go to a 1 year cycle and want that cycle to be in September they need to launch Z5 at the very end of 2015 with SD820, then the successor in September 2016. That'll be gradually increasing the timescales between releases whilst allowing a significant models inbetween.

This really is the only strategy that makes sense.

On top of that, they would really strengthen their series image would be to launch the Flagship, Compact at the same time, then six months later the two tablets and keep that as the yearly cycle.

Clear defined release strategies and major updates each time. The devices benefit from combined advertising budget, they only have to develop software for one hardware configuration (because it is the same in both devices just a different screen size). Let the public/tech blogs build anticipation over something they know is coming rather than second guessing if anything is coming at all.

I am %100 sure that the Z5 will come with SD820. If it is not ready by then they'll showcase it in september and release it in november-december. Z5 with sd810 is a false rumor.

The thing is Sony isn't yet ready to give up on its 6 month refresh cycle. At least not until next year. So the Xperia 'Z5' will be followed by the Xperia Z6 by 1H 2016.

As far as the Z5 is concerned, the Snapdragon 810 chipset will probably one of the only few things it will share in common with the Z3+. The rest of the stuff will be different.

We all know the reason for Sony to name Z4 to Z3+ in Europe.
The internal change wasn't monumental enough to carry the name of the true successor.
Only Japanese people can accept that name with very few changes.

I can't in my mind imagine that Sony would go from Z3+ to Z5 in Europe with the same SoC.
If they announce the Z5 with Snapdragon 820 and release later when the that SoC is available, then it wouldn't be bad.

@ramu

Is it an improved sd 810 or the same as z3 plus? Please say improved. I hope they will use sd 811 like what they did with 801. Sd 801 wasn't formally announced so I hope the same goes to 811
