Not really. A vertical screen makes much more sense while having a conversation on IM.

Simple answer. Do you keep your IM windows horizontal or vertical? Most people prefer the latter because its easier to keep track of a conversation that way.

I don't exactly see how a vertical screen is better for conversations because with a landscape screen, you don't scroll as much because it's more spread out. Applies to browsing the web as well on a phone with landscape providing the best view while browsing.

It is not about every single msg, it's about the conversation.

You want to be able to se many messages - the conversation, and not just one message at a time - that would be like using MSN/IM/ICQ/AOL/WHATEVER and only being able to read one post at the time.

Just think about how your typical MSN window look.

You need to see the big picture, the whole conversation, and that is where the vertical screen comes in to play...

I still think a vertical screen is not ergonomic (think of viewing angle between screen and keyboard) and itīs just goddam ugly. Even if they tilt the screen it would only be worse because of all the space the device would take. better NOT release this. Bad design = FAIL.

Are you serious? The phone's form factor is funky in itself, i don't exactly understand how convenient the portrait styled swivel is useful for a texting phone, won't a landscape screen be better? It's just opposite IMO!
On portrait you see 2 times more text lines than on landscape!
Like in massages:
portrait: 11 headers
landscape: 5 headers

See the difference?

Indeed, besides the only moment you will use the keyboard(which in your guys opinion makes it looks wierd) is when typing messages or URLs in web browser so it makes sense that SE implemented it that way. So i think the vertical display design is just right and sometimes better than having horizontal one.

The chatterphone is a breath of fresh air, IMO.
It may not be a beauty in everyone's eyes, but given its primary purpose the design does seem to make sense. It proves the new trend in SE's strategy of launching devices that can no longer be deemed copy/paste, at least not quite as much as before.

This one sure looks like.no.other in the SE portfolio.

Cheers!

It may be more convenient for messaging use, but I think the fact that it looks so easy to break and so ugly- this makes it offputting, so I question whether it will sell much at all (but alot of other details are needed before anyone can answer that).
