@dogmann your opinion i have taken into account. however, every product has teething problems. unfortunately errors can be hard to find when only a small number of products are tested, and errors that are deep inside the software can take a long time to fix

Agreed.

There is no way you can say "by anybodys definition were not ready to be launched". In my definition they were.

Oh no, the P990 was definitely not ready to be launched. If a phone keeps restarting when you press "yes" to answer a call it is definitely not ready. I am not even talking about running applications, just a basic function of the phone! It is like buying a car then finding out that you don't really know if the brakes will work or not.

You also seem to have no understanding of any sort of business principle. Businesses are there to make money. The one way there is to make money is to sell things. Sony Ericsson is hardly going to sell a P series in woolworths for 30 quid. It's a top end phone, expect to pay top end prices

Well my friend, you don't seem to have a very good grasp of business principles either. You don't sell a product like SE did the P990 and expect to keep a loyal customer following. I am not arguing about the price, that is expected and is the compensation value of the research done. But you do expect your expensive state-of-the-art device to conform slightly to the specifications advertised. No company would knowingly release a device like the P990 and expect to keep a good reputation thus good sales. Basic business principles don't want large number of returns for a product they have sold, which is exactly what happened when SE goofed big time with the P990. They were able to sell the P990 based on the good reputation of the P900 and the P910. Now based on the reputation of the P990, I doubt they will have the same success with a new P series.

The N series is a totally different game. Whereas almost everyone is quite pleased with the build quality of the P990, almost all the N series seem to have a squeaking problem, the build quality seems to suffer from poor workmanship and crappy material.

As for the iPhone, I think it will have its own unique problems characteristic of Apple licensing procedures, I don't think it will really be a match for the P990 as a professional business phone.

agreed that the p990i was a major disaster for SE. it just wasn't ready for the market, a mixture of development that got delayed for too long, and a product that wasn't even half ready and yet got released due to consumer pressure. I bet whoever was in charge of the fiasco has already got the can.

from the lucky ones who has tested the prototype and general word of mouth, I'm quite assured that SE has learned from there though. the p1i has benefited a lot from it's predecessors in terms of development and although bugs would always be present, I'm sure at least this time we'd get a workable product when it hits the market.

on a side note, I don't think the iPhone would directly compete with the P series. it's more of a fun phone, it's main competitors would probably be the Nokia N series.

@makbil

P990 built material is really cheap looking. Just look at the full keyboard keys and immediately "tupperware material" comes into mind.

From the developers site,

Sony Ericsson said,
RAM size is double when compared to the P1's predecessor, the P990

I'd snap this phone up for sure if it had all the original features of the P990 when it was first announced, the radio recording feature in particular.

Well, I don't agree. I say that the P990 is even better than the P900 but I guess it a matter of opinion.

Also the lanyard strap loop is also meant to serve to prevent accidental presses of the jogdial, which is why it sticks out.

So to everyone that's seen it, is the main frame really metal? Where the se sign is it looks to be brushed metal But along the sides and the top of the back all looks like silver plastic. Is that right?
