@ etaab

For the N97 phones in UK, Nokia once released an update for teh black ones, and a some time later for the whites!!
And both were CVs phones! So go figure!
And those phones had everything in common: Firmware version. Custom Firmware version. Language Packets. All pre-installed setting, features, and apps..

Only thing that differs was the Product Code due to different colors.
Yet, the two Product Codes didn't receive the update at the same time!

So what if we are talking about totally different PCs that feature different CFWs!

Anyway, I have this little blog post for you:
Link text...

And this link to UK Nokia Care online support:
Nokia Care UK

You can ask them this little question about Country Variant PCs and what differs them from Euro generic codes..
I have listed all UK's Product Codes above.. It could help to use that list as well..

Just send some formal and well explained Email, and sure they they asnwer you.
It seems this is the only way to convice you.

@ heara

I didn't quite get what are you asking for..
If you own an N8, just post the Product Code.
If you're asking just to make sure you end up with a generic product, the US is supported by both, CV and generic PCs. And no Operator Variants, that is no branded phones.

Latin America is supported only by generic PCs.. No Country nor Operator Variants.

For Latin America, all phones come with this custom firmware version installed: 011.012.C10.01.
For Bazil: 011.012.C11.01.

No other options anyway..

For the US: two custom vesions:
For the Country Variant: 011.012.269.03
For the generic PCs: 011.012.C09.01.

What difference between the two firmwares are there I can't tell.
Most probably though some services setting. Voip, MMS, Internet, WAP.
So basically there could be some minor restictions.. But I highly doubt it!

Restictions are more probable on Operator Variants..

Thanks Jake for the snap.
And so you too have a Country Variant PC and you too pre-ordered it from Nokia online if I recall right?

There were some suggestions that Nokia only delivering Country Variants to UK off their online store..
As it seems, for the countires with this type of PCs "enabled", Nokia ships CV phones rather than generic ones!

The question remains, how could some in the UK or USA for instance order a generic PC phone!

yea, i pre-ordered from Nokia USA online.
so how can someone get a Generic phone then? where do they sell these?
i really hope i do not have to wait weeks or months to get the updated firmware once it released.
that would really suck

Have you actually seen or know anyone with one of these Generic firmwares?
So, how many people would actually get the new firmware once ready? maybe like 5-10% of all N8's out there? that doesn't seem right.

I live in Germany, and here there are no Country Variants. Only Euro2 generic phones and Operator Variants.
My phone was o2 branded (Operator Variant) and I debrand it at Nokia Care..

However, I'm "investigating" the issue..

But as to updates, the majority of countries are supported by generic phones and Operator Variants.
Just take a look at the statistical post of mine above..
Generic PCs count to 74% Worldwide!

Some regions, like Latin America (that's South and Central America) are only given generic PCs!
MEA and Africa as well..

CV and OP PCs are mainly Europe really.. And still don't count to the majority of phones there.

I got the N8 last week but only today I can start using it as my primary phone. I had big problems getting Ovi Suite to work. It kept crashing when I tried to set up syncing with Outlook 2003. After testing a workaround I finally managed to make it work (description here). Finally time to retire my 3GS?

Guys, any explanations for the missed and inaccurate Exif information on the N8?

I still have had zero issues with the N8 at all except sometimes email comes in late although that may be the network.EDIT: Since I wrote this today I have had an issue which I will say only happened once. I had ONE application open which was Opera Mobile browsing Esato & the page had alot of data with photos on. It suddenly stopped & said please close an application not enough memory I thought Nokia had sorted this problem?? Why is this happening with one app running & nothing else at all??

Opera is quite a resource hog, had a similar thing happen when i had Opera, Gravity and Music Player going on both the N8 and older 5800, funny enough ive never had memory issues when using Opera Mobile10 on Android and WM6.5, it seems to be a Symbian thing.
