I expected better results from a 20.7 MP sensor and a G lens. Hopefully Sony can improve the picture quality with software updates.

Is it same old, same old when it comes to Sony and their mobile phone cameras?
GSMArena didn't say many good things about the camera so far.
a monkey could take a photo with the XZ1 and nobody would believe a monkey took it
Monkey is what monkey does - how can this be possible- next they'll be posting on this forum
but we all know it was a Sony Xperia Z1 - somebody please tell me that this phone is not Superior to anything inferior on the market today

ok I'll bite
Screen worse than Ultra - the inference is that the Ultra screen was bad and the Z1 is not as good - your command of English deserves what you get here, I have seen the Ultra screen and heard a very (normally biased) review saying that the Ultra is as good as anything out there and maybe even the best depending on what you need in a smartphone screen
My personal opinion is the Ultra is the best screen I have ever seen on a phone- I have not had the Z1 in my hand so I reserve comment until I do, but I'm expecting it to be even better
Lets get some official reviews going because all this baseless nonsense here is getting a bit boring

I don't know why everyone cares about viewing angles, I don't, it's better that people can't see your screen at an angle, as long as it's good head on I don't see what the problem is really.
Z screen has not only poore view angles, but very low contrast and dull colors. Orange color goes to yellow instantly... I don`t want same screen on Z1 after great Ultra screen.
From Z1 preview "The 1080p screen, previously a weak point of Sony smartphones, has been improved to the Triluminos variety, already seen on the Xperia Z Ultra, which should ideally bring more vivid colors and better sharpness and contrast. In reality, the screen still lags behind, say, Samsung Galaxy S4′s Super AMOLED display — tilt it a little and you’ll see the blacks go gray and the whites go darker — but it’s definitely sharp and beautiful to look at."

another interesting fact - the Z and Zu camera file size was about 1-2m - the Z1 camera file is upwards of 6m - and that is fine by me, that alone tells me Sony has been listening

@Latios: interesting, nice pick.
So from Sep 14 to 24 we can experience it at the zagin store, and sounds like it is exclusive, so it bodes well with a docomo launch in October. Good for sony if they launch on AU. It would be nice for then to start discussing with softbank so they can get on sprint USA.

i disagree with the conclusion.
z1 can't be the worst performer among those 3. the 1st three pictures prove that z1 is not inferior to g2. i'm just wondering how he came up with the portion of the photo to zoom into. is there any scientific way of determining which part of the images should be compared for the 100% crop comparisons? obviously, some parts will not be as sharp as the others depending on which part the cameras focused on.
the first 3 pictures show that lg does not deliver the best details. they compared portions of the images where the z1 failed to focus.

the last 4 looks bad for Z1 others are good. Sony still cant figure out their software even with cybershot team working on it? There was another review posted earlier that claims QX10 is worse than G2. This new review proofs that it cleary not true.

i don't think the "canon" photos are bad for z1 and qx10. they just look grainier because they are more zoomed in. if you compare the same sizes with the LG G2, you can see more artifacts and a more aggressive noise reduction. the g2 image seems to look better because it's slightly zoomed out.
the leaf macro, however, is really inferior although i think it can be easily corrected by taking another shot. there are times when the wrong angle and composition make the auto settings pass on the wrong judgment.
