I think they claimed that ARM's design was better than their Krait is just a way for them to justify their reaction.

The Krait cores were great, but they were not designed as a 64bit but a 32bit cpu. I think they was stunned by Apple and SS's 64-bit. They just want to be relevant in the game and rush a new 64bit CPU ASAP. Right now, they have to cope with their stupid decision

So I suspected their current (at that time) CPU road-map was disrupted. They had to abandon their Krait (32 Bit) development and come up with new 64-bit chip-set ASAP. So with that little time, they could not design a custom cores 64-bit CPU. Hence, they chose to use standards ARM designs for the Snap 820.

I think the 810 is just their stupid reaction to cope with Apple and SS 64 bit CPU.

Nope they didn't, All companies were working on 64bit designs, including Qualcomm, but all were not in a hurry and planned it for 2015 and 2016, but Apple planned it before that and they did it...

This made every company on their own thinking of plan B, Samsung saw the best is to wait for final ARM design and just do it as this will be the fastest way.. and to be unique: lets have it on 14nm... they can do it and they did it
Qualcomm was working on their Krait 64bit upgrade, but they will need a lot of time to do it and the industry needs something 64bit as soon as possible.. not to mention they need to have something to fight while the their Krait 64bit is done... Krait 32bit will not make it even with upgrades as it will be still 32bit...

So the fastest thing they can do is to go for standard ARM designs, just like Samsung and others... but the different is they will need to rely on 20nm as they don't have any other option... and to make things quicker they will rely also on Adreno...and the worst, because Qualcomm didn't work on this with others ( they don't use ARM designs for their high-end ) and Samsung and MediaTek already started before with these designs, Qualcomm rushed everything and did it with less than usual optimisations and work that needs to be done before launching it...

Even MediaTek didn't release their Octa as quickly as Qualcomm while they started way before Qualcomm just to see how much work needs to be done not to mention they didn't use A57 at all and they mentioned that A57 was not efficient at all, preferred higher clocked and optimised A53 over it and later A72.. not to mention the weaker GPU in MediaTek...

Every year seems to be a 'transformation year' for Sony.

Amen to that! But it's too early to say that. We still have 6 months before 2016. Sony could still pull off a hero product just like what HTC is planning.

So when does FY 2016 start and end? Q4 of 2015 and Q3 of 2016?

For Sony Fiscal year ends at end of March each year. April 1st was the start of FY 2015 and it ends on March 31st 2016.

So if 2015 is the transformation year, we should not expect killer phones. Aside from this, where the hell are the phones leaked in Indonesian POSTEL few weeks ago? Sony should have gone for Z3 Ultra instead of the compact tablet. Now my ultra is old and I have to upgrade but my only option is Note 5.

Sony should clearly state the release cycles for their flagship phones like other OEMs. Phablet and tablet at IFA, flagship and compact at MWC or private event around that period so we'll know what to wait for. Lots of people are on contracts and people won't wait 4-5 months for Sony. Guess that is why carriers don't like them.

^releasing an ultra around september would be suicide, nobody would care about it. It is the time where Apple and Samsung are releasing their "hero"products.

And people on contracts are buying the newest handset available when extending their contracts. If its ends let say in June and you want an Apple phone you can't wait till September so you have to buy the older available one. From that point of view refreshing your flagship every 6 month isn't that bad of an idea especially for those fast moving markets like japan.
