Maybe that time you did not lock the back cover properly!! That happened to my arc once too. I have to give the top part a hard press to make it "click" (lock the phone cover) proper.
I know how to put a battery cover on. The whole phone would creak & squeak when I held it with battery cover clicked on in every corner. Mine really was terrible. I am sure if I did have another one from somewhere else it may be ok.

What version of Google Maps does the Arc come with? Isn't v.5+ supposed to come with offline caching?
