The UK unbranded is still not getting 4.4. I wonder what's up with that?
Here's a very userful site to see which firmware is the latest for your specific phone variant.
http://scavenger.ch/sonyupdate/
(Just in case you didn't know: You can see your custom number from the *#*#SERVICE#*#* menu)

The front has a shatter proof film and I have a screen protector on top of that. The back may have something on it but I can't tell.

I guess that's the ASF. That piece of sheet is very prone to scratches.

Yes its the same with z1. The shatter proof sheet will easily get scratched. But your actual screen won't. You can either remove the shatter proof sheet (voids warranty) or put a screen protector or cover.
As I use my z1 with the dock and I generally hate covers, I ended up buying the screen protector just recently from zagg which even helps hide the scratches(minor ones)

Do you mean that the back of the Z1C has film on it too that can be replaced?

I really wish to know for sure if the z1c's back has factory film cover or not?

After updating to KitKat I've started having issues with the speaker volume. Sometimes it'll be super quiet despite being set to max. A reboot seems to fix the issue temporarily.
It's also my impression that battery performance is a lot worse.
Bah

Current Kitkat software has some sort of battery issue.

Yep, noticed more people complaining about that. However, I've not seen anyone else with speaker issues
