US is usually later than EU. The TOuch Pro will be released on AT&T, a leaked AT&T firmware is out. The TOuch Pro is going to hit the market between Aug 4 to Aug 30th, first EU and then the US.

Hmm. Being that the X1 is first and foremost intended as a North American device, I would think SE release it here first, breaking tradition.

Is there a specific American version of the TouchPro being released? They're frequency specs don't totally match AT&T network. Meaning, there are some areas of the country where the TouchPro simply won't work, according to it's specified frequencies.

Why is X1 foremost intended as a North American device? I thougt that this phone was going to launch all over the world with small local adjustments. As in the "i" for Europe and "a" in America......

Someone bring me up to date?:-)

I believe it's because SE wants to make inroads into the WM and U.S. markets. Yes, it will be released worldwide, but the U.S. is a specified target.

@WhyBe

I think you have misunderstood SE's intention of the X1 being used to break into the US market with being targeted mainly for it. There is quite some difference between the two.

SE really doesn't have the market presence in the US it has in the rest of the World and no where near the historic sales penetration either.

I know you believed that the X1 was AT&T bound due to their initially being an AT&T panel on the X1, but that may of just been SE trying to entice AT&T. What do you now make of the fact their is a AT&T Rom for the Touch Pro?

Do you really think that AT&T will have both the Touch Pro and the X1 when they are so similar? and they will have the Touch Pro earlier to.

@Dogmann
Quite simply, the X1 frequencies match AT&T's, not T-Mobile's. Those providers are the only two players in the U.S. GSM market. So it's just a matter of deductive logic. AT&T has also been picking up on SE Walkman phones too.

I haven't heard anything about the TouchPro being on AT&T yet (not that it won't be). I'll check with my AT&T bud to see if there is any TouchPro release info yet. When I asked him before, he said he heard nothing of it. They usually have "release" meetings before products hit the shelves.

@WhyBe

THe X1 was targeted not as a AMerica device but more of an entry into the WM market worldwide to catch their falling sales in the smartphone market.

Just because you have'nt heard of the Touch Pro coming out on AT&T does'nt mean it wont . Since there is an AT&T ROM there will exist a phone with the right frequencies. The DIamond has an offical firmware upgrade to allow the 850Mhz band as well. The Touch Pro it seems is a replacement for the existing TilT which is nothing but the HTC TyTN II.

@aksd and @Dogmann:

I know you two are skeptical of any info from SE but here's further indication of X1 being primarily intended for North America (read last paragraph before reader questions). This does not mean it is not for the rest of the world, though (obviously, the X1i serves this purpose).

Perhaps the TouchPro will be branded as the AT&T Tilt 2. It will be the lower priced "generic/store brand" of the X1.

Here's evidence of the TouchPro going to T-Mobile.
This will put the TouchPro at a disadvantage to the X1 in the USA

Also, I have a question:
Is switching available frequency groups on a quadband phone a simple matter of a software update? IOW, is switching 850MHz to a 900MHz just a matter of a ROM update?

they can aim it at the USA all they want - it will still do better in Europe.

Even people who want the X1 in America will probably try to get hold of the X1i because of the better video recording and playback.
