Yeah, that icon represents the Activity Menu. I would be very suprised for this to activate the camera, as it has been written in reviews that the W810i features both a Walkman button and an Activity Menu.

But the button on the side is indeed the shutter button, currently on the K750i/W800i this does nothing while the keypad is locked. What you are perhaps saying is that holding down the camera shutter could launch the camera (in a similar style to the Z520i?), or perhaps a combination of the Activity button and the shutter button? Hm?

its a very unique and powerful tool for a mobile phone to be armed with that ingenuity...

Just going to repeat what I've read from other forums:
The reason why there's no camera cover/protector is because this goes with SE's new policy of not giving Walkman phones covers for the cameras. It started with the W550/W600 and W900.
Basically the W series is always going to be the music orientated phones and the K series will be the camera/corporate type phones.
You won't find a high capacity memory card and quality headphones with a K series phone from now on. The same goes for W series phones. The will never get a lens cover because to put it simply, they're music phones.
So really there's no middle ground unless you try converting the software i.e. K750 to a W800.
And just to add.
I think that the exclusion of a joystick is a pretty good thing from SE. I mean many people have chosen not to buy an SE because of constant reports of joystick failures. It's not like SE has a good reputation for build quality.
I love the W810 though.

that joystick really throw away people from buying
phones but with the introduction of a new 5way middle key.. hehehe clever.. very clever... we do all hope that we'll see the last of those loose joysticks weve been cranking about.
hhmmm still wondering how sturdy the casing is... hhmmm built like a tank... built like a tank.... very interesting.. i really wanna get one....

On both W550 and W900, if you hold the camera shutter button on the right side of the phone for about 1 second, it will activate the camera application, whether the phone key lock is on or off.

Wonder how that would go as far as accidental photos of the inside of our pockets?
If it prevents case creaks then I think that's a good thing. But to agree with shaliron - I think upgrading the software of the new K series phone to the W810i might be a good option!
And moving away from the joystick is a good move indeed, indeed!

What firmware is that on? My R5AC011 W900i doesn't activate the camera with the lock on, and nor does it on my R4A W550i.
However, I am sure the first K750i I ever looked at (when it had most of the features of the W800i included like flight mode) let you do it. Maybe SE have removed it?

786BKR you are very wrong. EDGE and 3G DO NOT work hand in hand. You are thinking of 3G and GPRS. GPRS can run on 3G as well as GSM services. However EDGE runs on GSM NOT 3G. Sorry buddy.
EDGE is a slower competitor of 3G. So the EDGE phones cannot run on 3G and 3G phones cannot run on EDGE networks, simple as that. Nothing hand in hand about it.

Sorry I was wrong. I thought it works the same way as the Walkman button (which can be activated even when keylocked, provided the HPM-x0 is connected).

That virtually solves the lack of active lense issue for me. Though I'd ideally still prefer the active lense cover...
