@cfrancolini
i am not confused at all, 71 is the magic number (not 70), so if your first 70 characters include a 8-16 bit character, u will notice 2 sms right at the 71st character, but if you insert it later, for example, if it is the 120th character, u will notice it immediately (120/2), cause u will already have exceeded the max. Character amount, if a special character is included (max. 70).
Now, if u keep on typing until your message is, let's say 130 characters, and then delete some letters, it will remain 2 sms until you have reached and deleted the 120. character.
Hope this helps..

@myth,
Cool. Thanks for the explanation. I've gone back to the text message which reproduces this, and I can't see anything which would be considered a special character (its a plain English text message.) I'll keep an eye on things from now on and see if I can work out which character I'm using that triggers this.

Also check in Tools->Control Panel->Messaging that the character set is 7 bit and not UCS2.

I've noticed the same problem with SMS max characters of 70. Every 70 characters I send an SMS, so for example 150 characters = 3 SMSs.
I tried to select UCS2 set and now I can write 160 characters with a single SMS.
Till now I thought I had solved the problem...I'm doing wrong with selecting this set of characters?
Edit: I switched to 7Bit character set now and i can write 160 characters SMS too

Now I'm a little bit confused!

@Serfer
The 16-bit UCS2 (Unicode) which supports some of the East European and Arabic language is not recommended, because the mobile of the recipient must support it. Otherwise he/she will see a garbage of characters instead of a text.
Besides, it does not matter if u select 7-bit or the 16-bit ucs2, because as soon as you insert a 16-bit character in your message, max. character/sms will be limited to 70 characters. You CANNOT send 160 16-bit characters in one sms!
7-bit: max. 160
8-bit: max. 140
16-bit: max. 70
A/m applies to both, 7-bit as well as ucs2 mode.
So if u were able to fit 160 characters in 1 sms in both modes, it means that you've used 7-bit characters only.
Hope this clarifies..

@myth®, there is some confusion here. The 7-bit option is supposed to restrict the SMS format, but as you said as soon as you insert a 16-bit character that restriction is no longer valid. So what is the difference between UCS2 and 7bit?
Those with a P1, can you try to take landscape pictures while the camera is in macro mode? It turns out, in the P990 macro mode produces just as good or even better results even for non-macro shots. I wonder if the P1, although it has a different camera module, uses the same camera fw as the P990.

* Changing ringtone/sms tone
Trying to change the ringtone and sms tone didn't work for me at once... It kept sounding the default ringtone. After a reboot it did suddenly play the selected tones... Haven't tried it since then.
* Night mode seems not to be working for me...
Is it only me or does the Night Mode camera setting have no effect on the picture. In the viewer you can see the preview becoming lighter but after taking the actual picture there is no difference with the normal mode...
* Other camera things.
I really don't like the way it lets you know it's focussed. What's wrong with the plain old green rectangle (at least you see what it focussed on) and an auto-flash setting would be nice too. Not too fond of the camera so far (auto light balance does seem to be off pretty often too in my case, also have the greenish coloring on the bottom right side, simply not that good so far unfortunately).
I don't like the fact that image filenames/numbers get reset when removing the images from the phone. Once there are no images on the phone anymore it starts with DSC00001 again, I'd rather simply have the number increasing and not reset...
* No way to fast forward in the music player using buttons?
Keeping the next/previous track buttons pressed doesn't work... Would be nice (especially since I have mixes of 2 hours... Also, clicking in the progress bar sometimes 'restarts' the song instead of going to the specified point).
* Sometimes my headset stops responding, can't pause, change volume or anything else... Phone itself keeps on working just fine.
* Also the multi-selection, accidental opening one file (message, picture) and loosing the selection is annoying indeed.
* Other things... Alarm not working when phone is in silent mode. Alarms only ringing shortly and once (same with timer) and not being able to modify that? Could be me needing to delve into it a bit more though No bugs, but annoyances...
Other then that I really like the phone... no regrets at all so far!

Have had the P1 for a week now, so far I'm really happy with it, few points I'd like to make though:
- my ringtone and message alert sounds have reverted back to default (happened to my wife's P1 as well) for no apparent reason (haven't been able to reproduce this - yet)
- Camera not as nice as the K800 (I know that's a cybershot phone so they will always try and make them that bit better than the rest), but I can see room for improvement in future firmware updates. Quite happy with the picture quality.
- music player - to my mind - better than the K800, the skip track buttons could be a bit bigger for easier finger-operation
- I really do miss the profiles - Magic profiles for P1i please!
- I don't understand why there isn't a code memo-style application for storing sensitive information (Bank details etc.). Handysafe seems the best option but I think the price is a bit steep ($30)
Looking forward to the first firmware update, I'm curious to see if

are going to make major changes/improvements to the phone

When you change the theme on the phone, it sets all the sounds etc. to the default for that theme, could this be what you have experienced?
