I said it before and I'll say it again the main problem with sony mobile camera is their pathetic image processing algorithms. I'm
100000000000% sure that if anyone can make google camera app work on XZP/XZ1/XZ1C ( like other android device) the image produce by google camera app will obliterate many top flagship camera. Hell, the app even make Essential phone take pretty pics using only single camera. With much bigger sensor than that of essential phone it'll sure to get even better.
This is my hypothesis: I think Instead of making image algorithms suited for MODERN mobile photography Sony mobile camera department rely heavy on their other division. Mobile photography and dslr photography are vastly different things. You need to have superior image processing algorithms to compete with todays hyper competitive world.

When google released their first pixel phone they blow everyone away with their image fusion tech ( taking multiple shot, 10 shots to be more specific in rapid session, and fuse them). Smart company like : Samsung quickly adjusted and release S8 series phone with same image fusion tech ( don't know the exact number of shots taken) and they result is much better even if the camera hardware was pretty much the same as s7 series. Then HTC followed and then Apple. All these company now have top notch camera phone. Sony is still using their ancient tech for processing image and Sony is still lags behind these companies. Overall, even Huawei is better than Sony.
Pixel phone has proven that they have best in class mobile camera even without the help from dedicated camera SoC. With their dedicated SoC it'll get even better.
One more thing - People need to know that Pixel phone doesn't use OIS for longer exposed shot in night time. They use OIS simply to stabilize the shaking.
Anyone still think that Sony's camera are top notch, bashing raking site like dxomark because of their new standard, dpreview are living in their dream or simply didn't try the other top camera phone.
Main point: Instead of focusing too much on camera hardware they should focus updating their image processing. They already have top notch hardware now they need top notch software.

I fall in love with Sony mainly because of their image prowess back in the Sony Ericsson day. But yeah, compared to today's standard it can be called trash. Dynamic range is pathetic, Despite having bigger sensor and megapixel xperia phone lags behind other phones in details and noise department.
Honestly the pics from the verge review of xz1 was so bad that it actually made me want to throw up.
You just need to see the "TOP 10 BY DAILY INTEREST" from gsmarena to see how people lost interest in Sony phone. Even 3 years ago Sony phones are always on top 10 list of daily interest. But now, sigh.

If cam was as bad as some say then nobody would be able to achieve very nice shots.
There is a huge difference between phones and cameras.
Ppl are bot supposed to treat photos from phones like cam photos.
I remember to read what someone said in a discussion on reddit.
Ppl when compare they forget that phones have different FoV, resolutions and settings.
Example: G6 has 30mm lens, iphone 7+ has 28mm and XZs has 25mm.
It is wrong to place all three same distance from object.
Wider lenses phone should be closer to capture the same amount of the scene.
Example 2: one phone may be using ( ISO 30, 1/800s), another ( ISO 40, 1/ 1100s).
Photos of cellphones are miles away from the level of DSLR/MIRRORLESS.
Of course they will look bad if ppl crop more than 100%.
Mainly if photo has higher resolution.
Big photo will be giant.
Imx220 has 3MP, 8MP and 20.7MP.
If you zoom in, the 3MP will still look better because it is way smaller.
I have photos that look very good even on a 10 in tablet.
I do not like blind test performed by tech sites.
I do not understand why ppl vote always for brighter photos.
Even when they are very different from reality.
The front cam of all X flagships are better than S8, G6 and Note 8.
Less noise, deal better with bright scenes.
How is that possible?
I am not saying it the best around but not bad as some ppl claim.

Sony could improve on their image processing, but it's not as bad as some would say. Sony's auto mode just isn't that great. It's better than in the past, but you will always get far superior photos in manual mode if you know what you're doing. The camera in Sony phones are very capable if you know how to bring out their strengths. The algorithms could be better, but there's no way Sony or ANYONE can compete with Google and their AI processing.
@hboy - the pixel 2 already utilizes the special camera chip so what they've been showing is already what it does, which is phenomenal. Sony has done plenty to innovate the camera feature. The burst shot was somewhat implemented in previous xperias (though i can't recall the name at the moment). the AR, 3D scanning, SUPER slow mo, are all innovations. They should focus more on making their algorithms better. Maybe adding a physical bionz chip to their phones in the future.
