@sail my seagate 40 gb hdd that i bought in 2002 has developed bad sectors and now is having trouble being detected by win98 and xp. Hardly used it a year. Was dormant for 2 years. Will the seagate service center be able to retrieve the data from it ?

@Blu- 'Can' => Yes . . But 'Will' => No.. This industry has NO incentive to retrieve Customer data (beside it would be too big- imagine the amount of data). . For the HDD that came with my Sys I had similar dilemma. I risked givin it to 3rd party ppl. And disgusting enuf, didn't even go to pay/ pick it up. As the "image file" (snapshot?) itself busted & still had to pay service chg. Last resort only as they open the platter if needed (which needs sanitized lab area HARDLY there with 'chalta hai' attitude) This message was posted from a S700

Infact Blu.. hard disk detection has to do with BIOS on motherboard than the OS.. so just try putting it thru the Seagate DiskWizard Utilityfrom the link I pushed earlier.

As such, people you run shacks for "Data Recovery" are people with half cooked knowledge & they themselves acknoledge it.
The Disk Cache, PCB/ Hard Disk ROM can be found outside the vaccum sealed platters.

For the serious type R&D they have what its called a cleanroom =>
