Its actually a good thing. The venture was going downhill anyway. Sony has a much better market presence than Ericsson and ericsson coming on its own wouldn't have seen many takers. But I hope they both stick together.

A lot of people I know call their phones Sony anyway. Btw, A rival could buy Ericsson's stake or indeed any tech company looking for a foothold in the mobile market. Anyway, it is a rumour still.

well the dream for Ericsson and Sony on SonyEricsson seem to be hit hard by financial crisis.
well both have their dream when SE was formed.... but well as now sony and ericsson are so weak respectively in term of $.... they are going to give up their dream just like what Honda did on their F1 team.
sad thing....
but I hope it just either be change to Sony....don't give me Sony Motorola. Sony Nokia or Sony Huawei.... or Sony Siemens..... well many Ericsson fans will get sad over the final call....since Ericsson might get wipe off from mobile phone business.

To be honest, if Sony went it alone I don't really think I'd be too bothered. It would be interesting to see what each of the two companies would do if released from the venture.
I know Sony makes some nice stuff on their own so I have no doubt they'll continue to do so in the mobile field. We all know Ericsson has proven itself in the past as an innovator so I think they shouldn't have too much trouble continuing on. They at least have their network business even if they don't make phones.
So it doesn't bother me too much, although I would probably prefer to see SE survive.

Lol, I would love to see the quality of the "new" manufacturer at the same level as Brawn GP appeared to be after Honda!
Anyway, I hope they'll survive...

look at the Ps3 for inspiration. Its quadruples ahead of anything near in comparison, just that it was released a bit late. But whatever Sony does, it does so with gusto. I dont think Sony, if the venture dissolves would allow the walkman or cybershot phones to lag behind its competitors. Their walkman player are the best in the business, and hey Canon and Nikon are no phones, so they are leaders in the cam market as well.
To couple that up, think of the branding that can be put forward without any hassle. BRAVIA, VIAO,Sony Camcorder, PSP, blah blah and ahead. I am yet to see a joint venture that has actually succeeded in the long run.

Well if the joint venture were to cease Sony is on the losing end. Right now as stated their economic status is not at all well and if it were to dissolve they would practically have nothing to work on in the cellular business. The Walkman and Cybershot trademarks belong to Ericsson for mobile phones. So you also have to ask yourself this:
Is Sony really that stupid to go out that far and lose a market like that?
