Imagine how much X10 they will sell if it comes with android 2.1
Probably equal amount as if it were 1.6. People do no not buy phone OS:es and even less specific versions of phone OS:es. They buy phones with plesent looks and certain features (how the features were brought there one could care less). They even buy phones because of the brand (nothing that would help SE even if X10 was delivered with Android 3.0).

You were wright about one thing... most of the people buy the phones only because of brand or popularity.
But nontheless 1.6 to 2.1 is one big step in user experience where you like it or not. SE are the best at costumizing phones and make them very eye candy... on 2.1 with animations they for sure will have better results than on 1.6.
Dont get me wrong X10 UI is already good but it could be boring after a while with so much blue all around (I readed somewhere that they tried to cover the color limitation of the OS by choosing well the colors)

Agree with Arne Anka
You can choose the background if you like... You don't have to stick to the blue background... That is a choice...
Again most general consumers will not be too bothered about this... You will be surprised how many features from 2.1 have been ported over by

onto the X10...

But i dont understand why they didnt stop working on 1.6 to add those features when 2.1 was introduced. They spend so much time on making their own stuff, when that was already been done by google with this 2.1. The only explanation i see is that their pride was to big to let go the things they have done to the OS already. I dont believe they will have to delay the phone even more if they started to work on 2.1 sooner.
Now they will have to do the same work if they are going in fact to update x10, mini and mini pro ... (more money spent)

Because only a fraction of customers care what OS does the phone runs.
And those customers probably hack X10 and install 2.1 anyway which is much more fun to run the original OS.
So don't worry, be happy and buy an X10
Don't buy the white one, that is mine

Just like with satio i will only judge x10 when i have it. Im tempted to buy it ... but for now this is what i think: SE should have started to work on 2.1 sooner... probably would save them money and time in the end

Only if you use vanilla Anroid UI. With X10 you are supposed to get a better experience through SE's UX and in that respect 1.6 or 2.1 does not matter. Better to think in terms of what features and experience does it provide and how does those fit my/your needs. How those features and experience are brought to us should be of less importance. Because vanilla 1.6 does not support some features does not necessarely mean it is not there or will not be provided later on. BT is one example of many.

SE seems to use their own BT stack with e.g. BT file transfer enabled.
By the way, has anybody posted this X10's User's Guide yet ?

I don't think that SE wrote all the features which are contained in 2.1 again. They have ported many of them from 2.1 back to 1.6 - this wouldn't spent so much time and money.
I am using linux only on my desktop pc and my notebooks since many years, so it's one more reason for me to get a linux based phone, because I know the power of linux & open source. I will never use a windows mobile device or even iphone

linux rules

(Unfortunately I have to use WinXP at work, but with cygwin and KDE for Windows and some othe open source tools it's ok).
Can't wait to hold the X10 in my hands!

But still I don't know - the white or the black one
