Maybe SE wants to minimize moving parts on this model. They're usually the source of problems in long term usage.

I still think they should place a lens cover even if it's not active.

786BKR you are very wrong. EDGE and 3G DO NOT work hand in hand. You are thinking of 3G and GPRS. GPRS can run on 3G as well as GSM services. However EDGE runs on GSM NOT 3G. Sorry buddy.

EDGE is a slower competitor of 3G. So the EDGE phones cannot run on 3G and 3G phones cannot run on EDGE networks, simple as that. Nothing hand in hand about it.

OK max you not stupid just confused
EDGE is superfast GPRS... so therfore Im right!!! U figure it out...
EDGE is not a competitor to 3G... although you not the only one to think like this...
You are right about 3G phones not running on EDGE networks but the newer 3g phones will support both!!!
eg: 6680! against a std 3G phone... drop the 3g signal when browsing would u rather have std GPRS or EDGE as your default browser???

The debate between max_wedge and 786KBR made me interested in 3G and EDGE technologies and thought that I’d get to the bottom of this and find out who was right. Unfortunately I ended up just as confused about it as you two . Anyways I did find some information and to my understanding it is like this:

3G is a standard or a specification that mainly deals about the quality of the network and it’s services (like the data rates it should maintain and services it should provide like video conferencing etc.. for a technology to be recognized as 3G), while EDGE is a specific implementation for high speed data transmission.

EDGE is not technically considered as a 3G technology but as 2.75G; however some variations of EDGE implementation has features and data rates compatible with 3G standard so it is marketed by some service providers as 3G.

Wikipedia lists EDGE under 2.75G. 3G is listed to have 3 main standards/ implementations known as WCDMA, CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA.

From what I gathered it seems to me that EDGE is a cheap extension to GSM networks to provide 3G like services without major revamping.

Did I add more confusion to the matter ?? BTW correct me if I’m wrong.

WRONG Again ... from the GSM governing body of standards many months ago EDGE was granted a 3G certification license listing of such; BUT Max is INDEED correct that its NOT officially considered 3G by phone manufacturers or networks.

The speeds tell it all.

Now EDGE based phones ALONG with a 3G network that ALSO SUPPORTS EDGE WILL allow data browsing to SEEMLESSLY throttle down to EDGE speeds ... as a QoS (Quality of Service).

BUT Make NO MISTAKE in THINKING that a GSM/GPRS/3G alone network will support you GSM/GPRS/EDGE only phone and give you 3G speeds you'll ONLY GET GPRS!

Same for a GSM/GPRS/3G phone in a GSM/GPRS/EDGE ONLY network ... you NOT gonna see EDGE speeds!

Do a google search ... search these threads .... heck do a search on Esato with Max_Wedge & 3G/EDGE and you'll very much find that after 20+ pages of debate, wimsickle headaches & incredible insight ..... DO NOT argue with Max what EDGE/3G IS! You can challenge him on whether or not EDGE has a purpose .... but dont, EVERY angle of any possible debate on that has been covered ... more than thrice, lol.

Cheers Max; thanks for informing him.

PS: sorry I dont have a link on EDGE being designated a 3G technology but I do remember reading it from a GSM technology brief; most likely due to lab testing of theoretical highspeed of EDGE class 11 (yes it exists; usually we only see class 10 in phones only 1 has class 11 its a Nokia S60 phone that ISNT yet released ... N80).

It's not really important to classify EDGE by it's speed.
A 486 isn't a Pentium just because it is overclocked, is it?

EDGE is an enhancement of GPRS, in fact only difference is the bitcoding, an algorithm.

EDGE should belong to 2G as it is just a small modification of GPRS.
But, in fact, EDGE is a standard from IMT-2000, from ITU. IMT-2000 is the 3G standard!

With EDGE, (or UWC-136, it's "real" name) there is also W-CDMA (UMTS, also include japanese FOMA), CDMA2000, TD-CDMA, TD-SCDMA and DECT.
That makes it possible to say that you have your own 3G base station / 3G net at home, (if You have a wireless DECT phone).
Not many people do that...

prom1 thanks for your support buddy

@786KBR, okay I agree with one thing, EDGE will make a better fallback than GPRS, but it's still a fallback and you can only fallback on EDGE (as opposed to standard gsm) if your handset has both edge and 3G. When the 3G system starts to be replaced with something faster, 3G services wil become the new fallback and GSM will be dropped for good.

In Australia they are advertising fallback onto GSM only, no edge, so an EDGE phone would be quite useless in this market.

In some parts of the world EDGE will be run in tandem with 3G, but where 3G networks are being built from scratch (with no existing EDGE capable cell towers) they often won't offer EDGE fallback. I see what you mean now about hand in hand - but it's still important not to confuse the two. EDGE and 3G are completely different systems, even if sometimes they are used in tandem.

Ok so we getting somewhere!

I dont think networks will get rid of GSM in the near future.... maybe 2030!

Theres already a few edge phones on the market in Aus, 6230i, couple Samsungs... and I bet one of your networks will support edge in the near future... I assume more lower end mobiles will have edge...

Edge once again belongs to the GSM network... I doubt theres a network in the world thats running 3G with no GPRS networks...

So Max would you rather lose a 3g call when signals bad or have the default edge carrier to keep u connected?? Also maybe when browsing???

All Im saying when starting this topic is, when they released the W800/K750 they should have at least offered EDGE on them, coz every1 was after 3G, but edge would have been a better substitute...
Also what Iv noticed is all the countries that dont support EDGE have negative views toward EDGE.

Just imagine u had a W800 with EDGE and was in a country that supports edge... would be cool right, or at least better......

Anyway, I see listened to me and have done what Iv asked for in the W810!!

Hmm I know in markets & for wireless providers that have EDGE & 3G ... not to many in the world, btw, data can & quite possibly will fallback on EDGE from 3G; BUT I dont thinkg calls are routed through the same kind of HLR/VLR & subsystems. This is something new to me so I have no clue IF its EVEN possible???

W810i will be a nice phone, BUT I'm first going for the K750i ; then I'll go for the w810

Ok since its on topic, why would you choose the K750 over the W810... I know its not because of the looks!
