@wishmaster

I do not want to reinstate again that the SAMOLED is OLED. OLED is just a general term like LCD. In fact, SAMOLED and the PS Vita's screen belong to a type of OLED screen with active-matrix addressing scheme called AMOLED. All of the smartphones' screens you can find today are AMOLED. Yes, these screens may have different specs but they still are OLED! So amirprog isnt really mixing things up. He just saying that the OLED technology of Samsung called SAMOLED is not any better to IPS.

Oboy I think that means it is time for esato's annual oled VS amoled discussion.

I will start the soon to be heated discussion by saying it is the same thing. Samsung even makes the vita oled screen (oh no he didn't)

If so, I'm going to admit I was mistaken and am going to broaden my knowledge in this subject. End of discussion

But I still think that Sony should go with JDI's RGBW OLED rather than sticking with IPS, with proper calibration it should not only offer good, saturated colors but high brightness which should come in handy in direct sunlight.

Well played sir. Completely agree on RGBW OLED also, I think the problem is getting that in big volumes though

I wish they manage to make an OLED-LED hybrid; I mean every pixel uses RGB filterless OLED and a white LED but I guess it would cause some unification issue. I also think they should make their UI's colors use the larger color gamut but keep everything else natural. It would be awesome if they manage to make an energy saving UI with dark colors.
btw I feel so innovative right now.

Didn't want to start any kind of war

Probably, but every problem can be sorted out.
But if that video showing prototype of JDI's screen is in any kind informative then those screens should offer full RGBW matrix without any kind of pentile like on current samsung screens, which should be quite nice.

Microsoft did it with their metro UI. Some of their first devices were using AMOLED screens.
But remember that people like having choice so one will like his UI black and one will prefer his UI colorful - that is why iphone is using IPS screens, no matter what you're displaying, the screen uses similar amount of power.

Sony can use OLED if they wanted, I mean look at their cameras, even their Camera EVFs are now OLED, their cybershot compacts also use one, their Vita has one and many more. I don't really care whatever display tech my smartphone is using provided that I get the satisfying quality that I yearn for. I don't see the point bringing ourselves into pitting those display techs as if we were the ones who produced the thing.

I thought that the reason why they are not using oled is because they are not waterproof? FYI, the screen sony is currently using cost double samsung or htc.

Then allow me to decide for you, you will get more quality from LCD IPS, as of now. if OLED was so good RIGHT NOW then samsung wouldn't be the only company to really use it in more then 1 device, and even they are still using more LCD's then OLED's in most of their devices if i'm not mistaken.
@yuunanase
In general, i read the opposite, that OLED costs more to manufacture then LCD. that is said to be the reason for why sony stopped using OLED for PS Vita. also, OLED is harder to manufacture. that's what i read. Well, then if sony spend more money on the Z1 display then i would expect to see their efforts to show off better. i'm more impressed OVERALL with their rivals LCD display, not that i will buy a phone just for it's display, but if the Z1 screen was so good then there would not be units with different viewing angles visibility. some people do care about this and sony shouldn't ignore that, and please, don't tell me that all the consumers and reviewers who complain about viewing angles are liars. this is one of the common topic in every Z1 forum and mobile site i read. on the bright side, the Z1 screen is still a good screen and improved over the Z, so it's a progress, so sony should address this more in the Z1 successor. they are slow but steady it seems.
