It is that much of a problem ! and many companys including the one I work for, actually do ban cameraphones all together in order to prevent industrial espionage.
And youre missing the point, its not a question of banning cameras, cameras are allready banned in many places where photography is not welcome, while you are still allowed to bring a phone.
Its a question of phones that can act as a camera while pretending to act as a phone. That is the problem.
One example amongst many that could be mentioned:
Your local pedophile are in a dressingroom in a public bath. People would instantly react if he pulled out a real digicam and started taking pictures of the naked kids for later distribution on the internet, no matter if the digicam was silent or not. But if he holds a phone to his ear and mumble a bit, it looks as if hes just talking on the phone. To prevent him from secretly taking pictures while pretending to talk on the phone, cameranoise was invented.
Similar situation in a company demonstrating their latest secret product to possible investors. Cameras are banned but these important investors need their phones available. Next descision is, either ban cameraphones or enforce cameranoise.
The list goes on and on.
Enforcing cameranoise (in some countrys by law) is actually a way to try and prevent a direct general ban on cameraphones. You can have it either way, total ban on cameraphones in many situations where youd still like your phone available, or cameranoise, take your pick.
If people could only try and look past their own personal small worlds, and look at the bigger picture theyd understand the reasons.
If cameranoise is such a big issue to people, do buy a regular camera without it. I have no respect for the list of situations where cameranoise is "a problem", that is just poor excuses. Taking pictures of wildlife in the nature ? dont bring a phone, bring a real camera. Taking candid pictures ? try asking first if those being photographed in candid situations think its as good an idea as you do, if they do, they wont mind the cameranoise. Taking pictures of your sleeping kids ? again, use your real camera, its usually not a sudden moment where you only have your phone available.
PS: just remembered, sorry max_wedge, dont mean to pick on you specifically in any way, its only genereally speaking.

Very good points. I guess it's just a shame that the possible breaches of decency/privacy etc mean that the majority of well-intentioned people have to deal with what is obviously (from the response) quite an irritation.
On a different note, if/when we start to get real zooming capability (not the silly 4 x digital zoom), the camnoise won't be much use in prevention of such practices. What then? Is this just postponing the inevitable ban of camphones in many places permanently...??

yes very irritating I agree, and youve got a very valid sidenote, I never actually thought of that but one could fear that advanced zooming could have an influense on this subject.

Okay, privacy is a big deal blablah...
I don't care if there's a shutter sound that you can't disable! But please, what were they thinking when they recorded such a noise? It sounds as a slap in your face! I don't take pictures at all with my k700i, because I would be too ashamed to do it with people around me, it sounds really bad!
I have a Sony digicam (DSC-T1), as big as a (fat) credit card: the sound is much much prettier, and you can disable it too (which I don't, because I like that sound)...
So, camera sound, yes why not, but please, a nice one!

I also find the sound used really poor and downright annoying. I understand why its needed but I wouldent mind a better sound.

I'm shure this had been discussed here earlier, but I don't have patience to seek for it: How much better is the quality of recorded video clips on k750 than on k700? Does k750 have a full screen video watching feature?
