According to an MTN sales consultant I spoke to this morning number porting is already available. Can someone please confirm this, would be good news indeed. Talking of which what would the price be should I decide to change networks for arguments sake? Would say have to pay a connection fee ?

I suppose a porting fee might be charged, although i don't imagine it would be terribly high. Good news indeed. Hmmm, a first for MTN? Wonder if this really makes them the better connection?

Even though you'd have the same number you'd still require an MTN sim if you were on Vodacom. For PAYG subs changing networks would MTN still charge the R300 fee for a new starterpack? All these issues need to be cleared up before people start porting their numbers to a network.

I assume that would be the case where PAYG subs only use one primary number, in all likelihood those in areas where signal strength of a particular network is poor. (rural areas, EDGE, etc?) I don't see myself paying such a fee should i have a good urban signal, i.m.o....

@ brix,
I presume that all 3 SA networks are therefore prepared for porting,if what the guy told you is true.
Purely as a reference, there's absolutely no cost for requesting & receiving your PAC number with any network in the UK.I certainly hope the SA networks don't use this 'service' as another means of milking even further money out of people here.
I've mentioned before,in detail, how porting works in the UK,including their terms and conditions.
If on PAYG,why should I not be able to just go into Pick n Pay,Pep or wherever, buy a starter pack for R4.99 and phone up my new network with the PAC number and starter pack details? No 'connection fee' bulldust from UK networks with regards porting numbers and activating new sims,so let's hope the 3 SA networks don't either for this service.

Slowly but surely technology catches up with Afrique... I wonder how long before we're allowed to port our landlines as well, as is available in other countries...

True, but who would be porting landlines in SA if all we currently have is Telkom?(Correct me if I'm wrong..)
It just amazes me how Telkom are ALLOWED to dominate the market the way they do..
We've spoken in the past about tribunals etc,but are we any closer to getting more landline providers 'approved',or will Telkom's millions continue dictating & having so much say (+ perks..)with the powers that be?(at the expense of creating huge employment & healthy competition by having other landline providers..)

Correct, the previous post was meant under the assumption that we'd have a few more landline operators, hopefully in my lifetime. Does anybody know what the situation is in other African countries regarding landlines and the number of operators in those countries?
