To be British means to be sarcastic and even a little cynical at times, whilst constantly playing down anything one does or achieves and remaining measured and reserved at all times, but in a crisis, when one's back is against the wall, to keep a stiff upper lip and carry on regardless of the odds against one in the pursuit of what is good and right.
To be British also means:
Being able to drink copious amounts of alcohol
Racing around the countryside in open top sports cars with one's wife or lady friend in driving rain with the roof down; you wearing goggles and tweeds and the lady wearing a head scarf and large sunglasses, and your lady friend says "Bracing weather darling" to which you reply, "Rather."
Drinking warm beer on summer evenings in village pubs
Reading extremely large and unwieldy newspapers on a Sunday morning
Standing patiently in a queue and never complaining
Having your skin peel away as soon as the temperature goes above twenty degrees Celsius
Eating national dishes which consist of animal's stomachs, kidneys, or other internal organs
Knowing only the first verse of God Save the Queen
Not making a fuss in restaurants even if your food is crawling off the plate
Tweed
Pimm’s on sunny afternoons whilst watching a boat race
Wearing stripy jackets and straw hats
Plus fours
Using the word 'rather' as a form of acknowledgement
The inability to understand anyone else from your own country despite the fact that they live less than a hundred miles from you
Never giving up hope that we can win at sports where we have almost no chance of doing so
Rooting for the underdog
Moaning about the Monarchy and then turning out in our millions to cheer and wave as soon as there is a royal event
I wonder if it is possible to teach a sheep to do the measuring?

Apart from the sports car part it is all my own work; as for the sports car, I was inspired by something I read once. It didn't take all that long actually, they are British traits and I am British, so they came easily to me.

Quite right, but part of being British is to see one’s self as being completely different to everyone else. We have an island mentality and, as a rule of thumb, we don't take to rapid change very well or to outsiders trying to instil new ideas in us. Of course there is absolutely no difference between us and any other Europeans or anyone else, for that matter, at the most basic level, but many Britons enjoy being on an island and thinking of themselves as being 'different' from everyone else. I think that is probably the main reason Britain is so resistant to change or conformity being imposed by the EU. We don't really see ourselves as being 'European', yet we obviously are; if you asked a Frenchman or a German, or an Italian if they were European they would probably say yes, a Briton would probably say that he was British.
We are indeed a peculiar little group of people.
Have there been any measurements taken yet? We are waiting on an update on the Welsh situation.
