I think we can safely say that the vast majority of smartphones these days look very, very similar. I wouldn't easily award any of them any kind of award, however, is there a precedent to the lg prada of 2006? Looks to me like it was ahead of it's time.

wiki

I'd agree with the Xperia Ray getting an award as that is a cracking piece of hardware.

Could Sony be about to beef up its Xperia S smartphone? A new addition to the Xperia range has been spotted on an Indonesian website that goes by the name Sony Xperia SL.?

My money's on the Xperia P style softkey upgrade. It makes much more sense for them to be on the transparent strip itself rather than above it...

I don't think Sony have mastered the art of leaking info yet. It's dry for weeks at a time and then there is a flood of specs.

They ought to leak slowly but steadily. Like a leak.. in a pipe. Keep us going, keep it moist and occasionally change the info being leaked. Rather than concentrate on specs being leaked they could leak conceptual ideas, some could be way off and some could be accurate but the info should be keep us talking.

Hate to talk about fruit but the reason there are 101 rumours sites for them is because they have interesting rumours and they know that a device is coming that will be better than the previous one. With Sony (and other manufacturers) the next device might be a 150 euro 'social' phone with no interest to anyone except 11-15 year olds' parents.

I'm also not really interested in design awards for low-end or niche handsets. We should be talking about the upcoming handsets.

Shame on you Sony.

Qualcomm partners with Samsung and UMC to increase Snapdragon S4 supply, report says
Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 chip is a hot seller, but unfortunately for the American company, it has had trouble producing enough of the chips to satisfy demand. The dire situation — output wasn't expected to meet demand until 2013 — has driven Qualcomm to contract Samsung and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) to manufacture the 28nm chips for them, according to a report from the Taiwan Economic News. The company has been on relying on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to build the vast majority of its products, but the manufacturer has clearly failed Qualcomm. The report cites "people familiar with the contract," and says that UMC will begin making around 3,000 to 5,000 wafers per month — about 20 to 30 percent of TSMC's current output.

More details on the Xperia SL

We reported on the Sony Xperia SL late last week, all evidence points to it being an Xperia S spec refresh, especially seeing what happened last year with the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S versus the Xperia arc. A reliable tipster got in touch to confirm that this will be the case. The Sony Xperia SL will offer a CPU bump as well as a new colour.

This is exactly what happened when the Xperia arc S launched, it had a 1.4GHz processor and new Pure White and Gloss Black colours. This compared to the older 1GHz Xperia arc that was only available in Midnight Blue and Misty Silver. We don’t know whether the Xperia SL will launch with a higher clocked S3 Snapdragon chipset or whether it will move to the S4 Snapdragon chipset (MSM8960), so time will tell on that one. We have also heard that the Sony Xperia P will get a new colour, although timelines remain a mystery.

The update thing is not good for me, I know it's better but the original owners won't be okay with it + there's not so much different between them while in the same time it act as a complete other device and normally it will have quicker support when it arrive than the original one ( ICS update on arc s compared to the original arc )...

rather than spending R&D on such approach it's better to save it for better devices, like said before S4 will be a nice thing and Xperia S with S4 will be just perfect if Sony did it a while ago, I know S4 wasn't ready at that time but it will be something competitive compared to the competition...
