^biggest reason why japanese versions have more features or slightly higher specs is because of the providers in Japan. They require higher specs and more features. The mobile market in Japan is much more competitive than in other parts of the world. So, for a provider to compete, they need to have better phones. the trade off is an unlockable bootloader..
it's the same reasons samsung releases special versions in south korea. their mobile market is just as fierce.
@MNX - never ordered from them. they don't seem very .. legit. NO returns or exchanges? that's not how I like to shop online..

@moogoo Early ZL adopter from XDA actually bought from them. They seem legit enough that they will sell you a product and not cheat you for the money. Though, can't say much about their return policy.
