@brix25: MTN GPRS is just about the same speed as Glo GPRS, which is 40kbps. I have used both extensively and should be able to tell.

@amby: Haba, I am around. I check in everyday but do not post as often.
As aya also noticed, glo gprs has been glitchy the past couple of days. It seems ok now. Touch wood
I am quite pleased about mtn's commencement of its gprs service. Yes, there may be a temporary surge of new posters but it is inevitable that a few will stay and enrich us all with their discourse
Besides, it will be nice to have more people to send and receive MMS to and from.
So when are the results of glo's raffle comming out?

@egunje: Glo GPRS is still malnufunctioning at my end. I have called Glo Customer care twice now. No show.

Hi yah Brix, the volume of the SA thread scares me. Good to know you've been paying attention to our commentaries here.
My phone is not EDGE enabled, so I can't tell if MTN has EDGE here, but I'll try from a friends Nokia 6220 tomorrow.

What do I look for to determine EDGE capability on a network? My 9500 is EDGE-enabled, and I have my MTN SIM in it at present.

@Egunge: e ma binu.
I really havent tried accessing mms sent across networks; but now that my MTN sim is working again, I'll try downloading from the designated URL in the received text message.
I'll let you all know if it is successful.

To the best of my knowledge, most available GSM phones have no EDGE indicator. A few new ones, liken the Moto V55i, have an "E" icon to indicate EDGE presence.
For the rest, the only way to tell if you are on the EDGE

is speed. MTN runs between 2 and 28 kilobits per second in practice on my 9500, according to the tests I have run. That's certainly far from EDGE speeds.
Anyone interested can run speed tests here:
