First of all. 3G will never be the carrier for voice calls, GSM will remain for that use, 3G is for data and video calls.
3G coverage is very expensive, so in the near future 3G will only be available in cities and on big highways, not everywhere. Providing EDGE coverage is much more cheaper and easier to provide, therefore when you are a true mobile user (need access to the net outside of big cities too) then EDGE is much more important. When you're in a city you are better off using Wifi anyway.
I live in Tallinn, Estonia, where every other coffeshop, restaurant, gas station, etc provides free wifi. As I have heard, in the rest of the world free wifi isn't that common, but even if you have to pay, you get better speeds compared to 3G.

Same Core Network is used in both UMTS and GSM. That is, same HLR/VLR's are used. (and of course also the rest of the core network, MSC, GSMC, IWF, EIR, AUC etc.
Handover for both voice calls and data is supported.
Draqula; UMTS indeed is a carrier for voice calls, not only data/Video calls. When You have 3G coverage, 3G net will be used for voice call, not GSM.

only 20mb of int mem (no complex 3d games for you baby)
joystick(i know its fragile but its damn responsive and fast)

probably cheaper price (according to mobile-review.com)
i would still choose w800 because i dont need edge and i like playing games on my mob, but i guess these are the main topics

Concidering that an operator like Hi 3G can provide normal voice calls although they have no GSM network (just WCDMA), I say you are very wrong. It can be used both for voice, video and data.
An interesting point is the development of Evolved Edge (comercial start in 2007), which in the first stage will offer a theoretical speed upto 600 kbps (WCDMA 2 Mbps) and in a second stage a theoretical speed upto 2-4 Mbps (WCDMA-HSDPA 14 Mbps).

786KBR, the 3 networks here fallback onto GSM GPRS for data when the 3 network is not available, which is 48Kbps. I am aware of the EDGE handsets that are available here, but there ain't no EDGE network. Hopefully you are right and EDGE will be introduced here. Time will tell.
My guess is that it can go either way. However if 3G network coverage matures in the next year or so, then EDGE as a fallback network may not be seen as quite so necessary. There is a window of opportunity for EDGE to become popular but once 3G coverage is good then it is only a small percentage of the market (ie: rural areas) that will need the fallback to EDGE. Small markets like Australia don't cater to the needs of rural areas - there isn't enough profit in it.
Think about it like this - Because digital coverage was good when it came out and because of the technical complication no GSM phone had fallback to the analog network even though analog had better coverage than digital. The 3G data coverage however is really shite in most places, so there is a real drive to offer EDGE as a fallback, since EDGE can run on the existing gsm coverage area. But this drive will only last while GSM is significantly more widespread than 3G, and this scenario is quickly changing. Once 3G coverage is as good as GSM, the need for fallback becomes obsolete.
Operators are using two networks now for reliability but ultimately the network providers will want to have one fast and reliable network rather than a reliable slow network, and an unreliable fast network.

I have tried the W810i for like 1 minute. (I work in a shop, and one custumer who works for SE had one of these, a final prototype)
I could say it feels much "better" than my K750, because of a much sturdy, and a much more solid feel also. But the function didnīt impress me. Personly I donīt need EDGE or the 850 band. So I wait for the K750 succesor insted.
