To add my 2 cents I have used xda mini / imate k-jam & atom & I still have p900/p910. I basically love the windows environment & funtionality but have vowed after the atom not to use these devices why ? :

1) really cheap quality, compare it with any SE, nokia & these phones (htc/quanta) are really pathetic in quality. whether its outside or inside everything is cheap, the speakers, the body, the touchscreen (yes the mini some time down the line needs the touchscreen to be reset every 15 mins...no exageration) infact my 1st atom the sim holder just cracked on trying to open it to put the sim... the fm radio in atom...I wish they had'nt put any & the headphones provided were they for mankind ????

2) I really love a ppc phone the mass availability of software is too good but memory is really an issue if you want to use it more than a phone, windows (esp. wm5) suks memory every passing moment...

3) the reception how much ever you ppc guys try to defend is pathetic !! the ear speakers are terrible in all the phone sometime you feel like throwing the phone due to lack of clarity...

4) the worst, these phone are like hang-man, they need an excuse to reset, left right & center reset for this & that, the K-jam needed a reset if you are doing just anything & receive a call bang...reset , the buggers cannot be touched till atleast the are with 256 mb... for stressfree usuage

5) rather they go the m600 way than give the camera they give... please none & i mean none of the entire ppc phone have camera's worth even trying to click, its like the left over camera's of 2002/03 were bought by these guys at dirt cheap price & they still use them...

comeon if you are buying an expensive phone the only reason to buy it should not be that its ppc fuctional & rest is a real pain, till SE or someone equivalent does'nt produce the ppc phones (i mean produce not label) I would not touch them...

I still have my p900 in working condition (except the battery is weaken) after all these years & the ppc mini & atom I think their main life may be just a year or so in stressfree condition...

I can't comment on earlier devices, the TyTN is certainly at least equal to typical SE build quality. Some might say the TyTN is actually better built.
Admitedly, HTC don't seem to be able to manage quite the polish the SE have with their devices, but I don't think this detracts from the overall quality, and I most definitely would not describe the TyTN as looking or feeling cheap.

If you think memory is an issue on PPC devices then you should try current UIQ3 devices. The M600i and P990i in their current states are more memory hungry than WM5, and appear to have issues with memory leaking like a sieve.

I understand earlier devices may have had reception or call quality issues, but the TyTN is more than a match for SE/Nokia.

Again I suggest you try a current UIQ3 device. The TyTN is significantly mroe stable at the moment, and I'll think you'll find others say the same. Your statement actually applies more to the P990i in its current form.

Sure, cameras have never been HTC's strong point, but the TyTN is much improved (Masseur posts a couple of P990i/TyTN comparison shots earlier in this thread and the quality is actually pretty comparable), although still not up to SE standards. Most people who buy these sorts of devices are not buying them for the camera anyway - it is an added bonus.

@sleepyhead

hear what you say but the screen and keyboard of the TyTN are not of the quality HTC have put on the Universal (based on the faulty Voda TyTN I used, which also had a very unsensitive touch screen). Call quality on the TyTN is better than the Universal but I feel the P990 is still marginally ahead.

@jah - well like I say the HTC devices lack that extra bit of polish the the P990i has, but I don't think it detracts from the device as a whole.
I think my biggest gripe with the TyTN was the 65K screen compared to the 262K screen on the P990i.

I really do think my ideal device would probably be a P990i running WM5.

Must admit I am starting to wonder if maybe I wasn't a little hasty in quickly dismissing the TyTN after I got my P990i. I am thinking that maybe when the initial "new device" excitement slowly passes from the P990i whether the TyTN would be just as good a bet afterall...
Ultimately I guess the deciding factor will be over the longer term - unless the UIQ3 software catalogue increases rapidly in the next few months, I will almost certainly be off to Windows Mobile land for good, and right now (especially with the added complications of Symbian Signed) I am not convinced the UIQ3 software catalogue will ever match UIQ2 volume wise.

I know it's off topic but I just got me my TyTn (M3100) on Orange, I'm on the Panther tarriff so aparrently free off-peak internet access.

It's killing me having to wait for it to charge.

Bit of a bummer as my PC decided not to boot for some reason, so I'm just installing Windows again.

Sorry it's off topic again, but I can't wait to be using the Wi Fi when I'm out and about, lucky I got lots of friends with Wi Fi, just hope they will let me have thier passwords.

this thread has come along way and it sways towards the TyTN one day and then towards the P990 the next day

Its interesting to see people come out with the same sad old statements about windows mobile devices and I feel alot of these comments come from people who have not really experienced the WM devices to their full potential.

Also some posts here are very much of the anti-Nokia style that we see so often on Esato and so I'm tending to take less notice

I've said quite a bit on this topic but having used the TyTN for two weeks now all I can add is that I was quite impressed with the JAM, I really liked the K-JAM but now I lurve my TyTN though I am somewhat impressed by the P990 but it still has a way to go in terms of software stability for me to trust it, and at the end of the day, if I am spending this much money on a device I rely on every day trusting the device and having confidence its not going to crash or restart on you at the wrong moment is important

at the end of the day though, threads like this are useful because if you read through them and take a balanced view ignoring the extreme comments and taking note of experiences and anecdotal comments then you can get a very good idea of whats best for you.

I certainly don't want people to get a WM because I happen to like them. They suit me and my way of working but this may not be true of others.

Oh... now you tell us, at least I kept the recipt.

nah only kidding, but I did, just in case I don't like it.

Someone mentioned about the weight of the TyTn, I must say, it's not heavy at all, but maybe I have become acustomed to my P900.

Does anyone know of good websites to download applications/games for the TyTn at all?

Thanks in advance.

this should get you started...

http://www.freewareppc.com/
http://www.pocketgear.com/
http://www.handango.com/

definitely get the free media player called The Core Media Player

SPB have some great software. I use SPB plus, SPB weather and SPB Time.

VidualIT have a great TUBE program with maps (tube, train, street level) for various cities and don't forget if you have Microsoft Autoroute then there is pocket streets on the CD with some preset maps or you can make your own from the maps on the PC.

Resco have a good file explorer which also includes a registry editor

if you use Advanced Call Manager on the P series then you'll want Smart Filter which is a windows mobile equivalent

Pocket PC Thoughts, Brighthand and XDA developers are among the better WM forums. Also look at Cool Smart Phone

Don't forget to create yourself a free 2mb Avantgo account for offline content reading. I use the paid for 8mb service and this keeps me occupied on the way to and from work on the train every day.

I would recommend a very nice informative programme to all WM device users. Spb Pocket PC Tips and Tricks.
This gives you some basic and very useful information about working with your device and various programmes as well as the possibility to do some very nice tweaks (under te tweaks section) in order to change today screen appearance, pop up menu fonts etc..It even allows you to wake up the processor to its max potential..!!

Are you suggesting we're a fickle bunch?

Yeah, you can really tell when people talk about these devices without ever having used them before. I have no idea where the whole "Windows Mobile is very unstable and needs resets" thing has come from - from my experience I'd say it is very stable indeed, and the only real issues I've ever seen is conflicts with third party software. I'm sure half the people who complain about Windows Mobile would lap it up if SE ever produced a Windows Mobile device.

Quite agree, which I guess is why a number of us have gone for both devices in order to make an informed personal decision ourselves.
