Hi guys,

I am considering buying this phone. Any opinions / recommendations?

Currently using a Nokia Pureview 808 for camara / gps and a Blackberry Z30 for multimedia (movies, games) and social (facebook, twitter, chat)

I'm looking to replace the Blackberry Z30 with this Xperia Compact.

Hi all,

Just got myself a Z1 Compact and I'm loving it, but I just want to know if anyone knows if you can manually select which apps can access mobile data and which can only use wifi connection, etc..?

Thanks!

I think stamina mode can do that, just long press stamina mode in the settings power management and then it should be able to assess what's using what. If not play store has heaps of apps dealing with this. I think malwarebytes has one.

Where in nz are you? I'm in Wellington!

well you'll have a LOT more options - powerful ones - for apps that perform multimedia (games and movie codec support especially)! Twitter and FB app specifically the latter is very modern (chat heads supported), about 10 other more popular chat apps ... including BBM (Video and ScreenSharing to happen soon enough).

Camera should be comperable if not close to equal as the Pureview 808.

PS: I just tried, from an I.T. perspective to lobby for iPhone at my work - their very tight on security and Good license is $100/seat per year - so Unless I cough up $600 for an IPS and get approval I'm stuck but at least I'll have a Z30 next week Friday. The shoot down is the 1000 users in Canada alone that are using BB - older cats (but they're modern as many have iOS/Android as personal devices too, go figure)!!

PSS: I'd not think twice and sell off that Z30 ASAP it's loosing grey market value real fast! I think you're still in your 15/30 day return policy period so do that right away and get the compact. I no longer have faith in BB being the same business (no more hardware, just services).

WOW! Supa Fly, you've taken quite the 180° turn WRT BlackBerry, what changed your mind? The outsourcing of production?

Outsourcing of production, oh no ... I was all for it, still am. I was calling for that on here, HoFo, and CrackBerry for 2yrs before they did it ... back when LG was hurting and looking for a partner to produce devices for!!

It is BB in business of selling ALL property in Waterloo to finish in less than 30 days to other parties! Then renting out what they need. This SCREAMS a NEED for cash because nothing else is working. So their spending MORE for their NOC, networking (as in internet/intranet) and the fibre into/out of their NOC - no small potatoes really) and at end of May 2014 they'll be paying their property buyers $$ to rent off of them. Doesn't that just sound STUPID!

Apple was in a similar if not EXACTLY the same state that BB is in ... there is NO correlation to be drawn though because Apple was severely savvy and smart ... in less than 10yrs their a GIANT ... BB huh I wouldn't even think. I totally and have ALWAYS believed Mr. Chen, current CEO is after dime and nickel, part and parcel to SELL the company whole or in part just like Siebel when he was CEO ... he's making the EXACT same moves!!

If BB survives another 1.5yrs mark my words it'll be a SERVICES company with a hardware division parted out. I do expect 1 GREAT handset from them near Christmas much more than was Z30 is worth.

To be brutally honest ... I LOVE BB10! But it's the lack of powerful apps, the die-hard fan base that does NOT put $$ where there mouth is for recruiting creative/struggling developers to CREATE the apps they WANT! I 've personally offered $50CAN and enticed others to pitch in for a REAL, Qt5/6 native Cascades app that'll connect to AD and suppport ALL abilities - with ability to be SOLD by developer under $5 WITHOUT connecting to an external server/service.

Ah yes! They are selling their Waterloo real estate and leasing back whatever space they will use, I heard about that and immediately thought that is a very desperate move and one that sounds more short term based than long term, they know as well as you that it's pretty much over.
Looking forward to seeing that Z3, unfortunately for ol' BB the LG G3, Samsung Galaxy Note 4,and Apple iPhone 6 are also launching soon, with ridiculously powerful HW, SW and huge followings, its going to be very difficult for BB to make a mark at this point.

^ lmao ... no doubt!

Right now the ONLY thing(s) keeping BlackBerry afloat for any period of time from today is:
BES production installations & CALs for BB10/BBOS devices on them. This is possibly the MOST lucrative business for BlackBerry and most likely the one keeping them from waving the white flag!! Hmm maybe BB should consider having THAT team manage the consumer side, hmmm. Actually BB FRAK'd up when they changed the company name to "BlackBerry" ... that lossed the chance to start completely fresh from a consumer market race. The could've started a whole new consumer brand name but NNoooOOOooo. pssssh, whatever.

Z3 will be a nice cheap competitor to many android phones but in the end? Who knows. iPhone 6 looks like it'll be quite the kit - Apple just hired the snr tech of their camera division!!

Yeah, that's what i was thinking. I mean, I love BB10 but BBRY is commiting the same mistakes over and over. I dont think they will be in the smartphones market by the end of 2015.

So I've been thinking just having the 808 (which cannot be replaced, I rather cut one of my fingers) and the Xperia Compact. Mind I have to have 2 phones and one of them has to be the 808.

I was impressed by the Xperia compact being waterproof and that takes memory card. Oh and the microUSB port is MHL, so I can still use HDMI on that.

Just make sure you use screen protector on the front or a case. The Xperia Compact was the last Sony to use the horrid shatter proof sheets which scratch easy

Bonovox = good tip and point!

I'll consider the upcoming Sony Z2 Compact - if it's actually going to happen ... that or the IP6 (Don't laugh car integration is light-years ahead of what I've researched in QNX/BlackBerry). So I'll have two phones .... 1 NanoSIM+MicroSIM adapter ... Z30 in 2wks tops and iOS most likely. I do love how Sony is improving their UI for Android ... but I fear Android OS 5 will limit a LOT of that as well so we'll all see. (Google wanting to control Android a LOT more than just their apps and services).
