That Good Light photo of Xperia 1 is out of focus at the center big time. Even XZ2 has better sample in Good Light because it's in focus.

I guess it was was resolved since. Based on that comparison tool, the P40 doesn't impress at all.

Remember Asus Zenfone Zoom?
With true zoom as periscope.
Moving parts.

Would be nice to see on Mark III.
Someone please, deliver the idea.

Not to be unfair, but looking at the Low-light photo comparison. Xperia 1 is having more detail but with more noise.
Not a great comparison since both have different ISO settings: 500 iso and 200 iso respectively.

It's just that all phones now are all good in preserving details especially in good light. Actually even in low-light.
No offense, but the huawei P40 is just marginally better to its predecessor or even to let's say Xperia 1. It's not groundbreaking

That site seems to be 'reaching' hard for a reason to complain about anything Sony, especially the Xperia 1 mark II. 4000:4300:4500mAh battery is not a big deal. Other factors come into play as well:
Galaxy S20+ Pro 5G has a larger screen, multiple 5G bands.
Huwaei P40 Pro+ doesn't get full Google Android with GPlay services - you may see XDA-Developers work hard on getting that happening though.

Just remember ... the full kit should be more than the sum of it's parts, isolating just a part or two shouldn't be enough to sway your decision. I'm now beginning to see the lack of rushing a product out may work in Sony's favour here.

Some info about the camera lens
https://technave.com/gadget/C[....]-and-2-from-Samsung-17595.html
"
According to GSMArena (via AndroidNext), the rear camera setup of the Sony Xperia 1 II features two Sony cameras and two from Samsung. Its main camera is a 12MP Sony IMX557 sensor (f/1.7) and the other Sony camera is an ultrawide lens, which is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor (f/2.2). The third lens is a 12MP telephoto lens (f/2.4) using Samsung's ISOCELL S5K3T2. As for the second Samsung lens, it's used on the front selfie camera, which is an 8MP (f/2.0) Samsung S5K4H7 sensor."
Its interesting that the webpage has a photo of the phone, thats a good sign that its making its way out

Low Light sample is in focus which means GSMA is at fault here for Good Light sample. They probably took the faulty snapshot or Xperia 1 was a mess at the time giving inconsistent focus from shot to shot (Sony phones love to do that in automatic mode). They took those photos on a tripod so it could be that Xperia 1 had some issues with tripod mode as well, who knows. Because of the Tripod mode on XZ2/XZ3 their Good Light samples look great, so much better than anything at the time including Pixels and iPhones. See it yourself.

Xperia 1 is low light beast and that's been acknowledged even by big tech blogs that don't endorse Xperia such as The Verge and Anandtech. It does however use aggressive sharpening and can't recognize shadows so shadows exhibit some granular bending like botched dithering. XZ2/XZ3 are even worse in that area even in good light. So there was progress from XZ2/3 to X1. Check out how P40 Pro recognizes the shadow below colorful rubber bands and makes them smooth unlike X1 but overall details of objects are not as sharp as on Xperia 1 when in focus.

This video shows demo device in au store. The phone looks beautiful IRL. I am having a hard time choosing between black and purple. Camera seems laggy, and it crashed while he was zooming in, but still too early to judge. From the auto-generated translation to English, looks like he's got a friend working at Docomo, and he said they are working on a patch? Anyone speaking Japanese can help translating that part?

that's pretty much what he's saying. early software cause it's not expected to be released until may.

software will be finalized more later. kinda disappointing that the software doesn't work pretty damn good by now though. the video is also using the stock app and not the photo pro app. curious if they just pre-loaded it with the same stock app from xperia 1, which is why it's buggy.

I do not like this purple.
X1 purple is much better.
Now looks like you mixed 1/3 cup of grape Fanta with 2/3 cup of water.
Or cheap grape juice.

If they had announced 5 II too instead of waiting september , could be a great move.
S20 is about $1000. Mi10 (non-pro ) 256GB is 900 euros.

But in september, these phones will be lower than 800 euros.
While 5 II will be full price. And who knows how much ....

This looks like a tv add of 10II.
I dont think it is sony germany official (only 74 subscribers).
Phone looks much better than in photos.

Some regions will face some delay.
