On a commuter MTB such as yours, ordinary clothes will be fine.
For speed and distance on a bike like mine you need tight fitting lycra.
For rough terrain/mud you'll want something a little looser and tougher.
Off road clothing is usually good for hiking too.

I cycle to my work every day, ive got a GT Arrowhead that ive had for ages and ages, good bike but getting a bit dated now. Anyone got any suggestions? I travel both along the road, and along a bumpy old railway line, so i need something quite robust

well check out your local halfords in the Janurary sales. bikes go for half price so you could set something with suspension and a robust frame
