PD requires extra stuff int he camera, a secondary internal lens ( not visible of course ), a focus sensor nearby the original sensor, the camera module will be larger to hold the new extra's... so beside the cost and complexity; PD is larger also and this is why they're conservative regarding this matter...

Currently you don't need extra stuff for phase detection, what was till know done through a dedicated sensor right now is achieved through dedicated pixels (instead of recording RGB wave length they calculate the distance, with some changes of course). This is how it is done in most high end mirrorless cameras right now and this is how Samsung is doing it in S5.

True, microlenses on the sensor need to be adjusted but it's not like they're not already on the sensor. So it doesn't require any additional space, but I agree cost and complexity is something that has to be considered.

If anyone can do it, Sony can, they have the know how and expertise and manufacturing. If Samsung pulled it off, so can Sony. If anything, Sony could use such a new sensor in their upcoming point and shoots or higher end point and shoots in order to reduce the costs.

Perhaps Sony will announce this new sensor for the Z3 before hand or just announce it with the Z3, since it will probably be another Sony exclusive sensor again.

@CrownedAkuma

Should any Xperia Z1/Z2/Z1Mini user be worried about that heat sync shown in your second picture?! The fact that its there has me a little concerned as these are mobile chips and really shouldn't have a need for such a design or implementation to utilize heat syncing!!

I guess you meant Heat sink

Those are not Heat sinks, these are Shields to prevent RF signals from going in wrong way, and prevent external RF signal from affecting the high frequency signals inside ( which will create errors that decrease the stability and performance )...

These shields are a must for every high-frequency device like smartphones... even simple devices like Network cable, USB cable ( specially USB 3.0 ), HDMI cables are shielded in a way or another... for example slower network cables ( like Cat 5 ) shields the whole cable, but faster cables like cat 6 or cat 7 shields individual data pairs as well as the whole cable... same goes for USB 3.0 cable and HDMI 1.4...

Of course they serve as heatsinks also, but only for high-end devices and the main purpose of them is RF shield.. as even low end devices ( where the chip won't go hot any way ) will have these RF shields...

I think it's even part of CE certifications for high-frequency devices...

The new spot for Xperia Z2 and the new Jacko album crossover... the album will be called Xscape!
I do not know how many tracks wil be avaible inside it but still I like what I'm hearing... I hope this is not just a loop of the same pieces put together to resemble a song!

@my ninja
nice. it is supposed to replace the usb only on smartphones and tablets or also for any other electric device like computers usb?
EDIT: ah, nevermind. of course it's suppose to replace any device's usb. otherwise the cable wouldn't be reversible...
