@amawanqa
No I don't follow the forum regularly, just read the last 2 pages to see if anything is of interest, but my impression is mostly that the forum are dominated by 2 clicks of shop members of competing operators and the one always try to outdo the other etc.

On the other hand I'm reluctant to use vodacom/vodafone as I object to their excessive branding and lockdown of their handsets.

I'm only going for a week as I do not have any more annual leave days left, so I just wanted to find out what would be the cheapest option for me to make/receive calls from my relatives and also if I get the odd call from the UK.

I'm on the 250 contact with O2 and pay the "cheaper" ITS rates.

Can you believe, this will be the FIRST time in SIX years that I'm going back to the homeland and only for a week. So many Charles Glass' so few days...

Did I interpret MTN and Vodacom rates correctly as between R1 and R2 per second?

@Uncle Bob, nope, it's definitely not per second. A mid-range voucher from MTN or Voda should do the trick, depending on your calls, of course. It's probably way cheaper to get a PAYG sim once you're here, and choosing the per second option. Hope you have a safe journey over, and a pleasant and memorable stay. @ Uncle Bob,
If you feel that strongly to spite Vodacom/Vodafone by not buying a temporary PAYG sim and a few vouchers because of branding issues on their handsets, then indeed settle for MTN,but it might be an idea to check with your relatives as regards the network's signal in the part of SA that you will be visiting.

@ Uncle Bob,
Now check this;I found O2 contract roaming prices while in SA on their website, with relative ease:

@ Uncle Bob,
No. If you are referring to call rates, these are per minute.
Herewith one of a few MTN PAYG tariff links to compare with the O2 link I posted as well:

Hope all this info helps...

Lekker kuier.

Attaboy, Amawanqa. After much deliberation between yours truly and my insurer they've finally acquiesced and agreed to replace my 6600 since the software's had it, irreparable, etc. Should know within the week whether i'll have a choice wrt a replacement phone. Also, Altech Cellular working on a P910i for moi :-) This message was posted from a Nokia

That's great news,Kryptik!
Perhaps if they insist on replacing the handset with another 6600,you could take it to your nearest Cash Crusaders and use the money from this towards the Kryptik P910i Fund..?
As I type this, there is an eBay power-seller selling 5x P910i's, brand new and sim-free, for £259.99 at the mo...!(Approx R3060.)
Here's the link:

Thanx boet, appreciated. That fund would certainly welcome a boost... Made a good connection at Altech Cellular in Jhb. She's looking into the p910i situation for me, hopefully good things will result from it. @Uncle Bob, cliques?? This message was posted from a Nokia

A few drops of the hair of the dog that bit you apparently does the trick. However, as my dad taught me, confine yourself to uisge beatha, and drink plenty of water whilst imbibing... Or just don't drink :-) This message was posted from a Nokia

@Uncle Bob: Have you received the R6billion yet? On a serious note being an open forum you'll get some people who are trying to convince you, without substantiating to the to the the merits of using particular services. If you look through all the hype you'll hopefully find some answers about the SA cellphone industry.

Here's some on the new tariffs from both networks...note that with MTN you actualy have to buy a new starterpack.
Courtesy of the Mail & Guardian
Quote:Vodacom's new tariff plan launched on Sunday will see an on-network call rate of R1,49 per minute for pre-paid and contract users -- from 5pm to 8pm. The downside, however, is that its customers making Cell C- and MTN-destined calls will not enjoy these benefits.

With MTN Wow Wow, users will pay R1,65 for on-network and Telkom-bound calls and R2,28 for other networks. In addition, MTN users will be able to send 10 SMSs and five MMSs per month at no charge.
