So how big is the difference between ericsson and sony ericsson and sony to for that matter!!!

Sony and Ericsson own Sony Ericsson. SE is the mobile phone division. Ericsson does many things like Mobile network structures, defence equipment and business phone systems. Everyone knows what Sony do.
SE is run as seperate company from Sony and Ericsson although parts from the 2 companys are obvious in SE phones.

Sony Ericsson's main markets are/were Europe and Japan, both had early 3G network and this is where the majority of its customers where. Why should have it bothered wtih EDGE if its core markets did not support it. What a waste valuable resources.
This is now changing with the introduction of Edge on mid range models and Sony Ericssons wish to boost low/mid end models and market share in Asia and North America and Africa.
The reason why it has only bothered with 3G handsets and technology in the past is because it is a young company and probably wanted to groom itself as a high-end niche manufacturer, which it did.
3G phones = high-end phones so that is where its resources went.
What people fail to realise is that
NOKIA is 11 times the size of Sony Ericsson
Nokia employs 55,000 against Sony Ericssons 5000, which gives you some idea of the difference in the size between these companies.
David and Goliath anyone?
Nokia has got huge resources to release EDGE enabled phone after EDGE enabled phone at the drop of a hat and is able to compete in every market successfully.
simply hasn't.
Each handset had to be carefully targeted at a specific market / buyer or it would just lose out and a big mistake could be fatal to such a small company.

You seem to assume the whole Nokia makes phones...
In your figures, compare Nokia's size to that of SonyEricsson PLUS Ericsson. Also do not forget Ericsson Mobile Platforms within Ericsson.
Anyway, EDGE is also being evolved to provide better coverage, better data rates. That's where the future lies as well. 3G is not going to be any time soon (or at all...?) as massive as GSM/EDGE...

Ask yourself, why doesn't every handset have BT and IR?
The point I am trying to make is that the early 3G handsets that
made were targeted at certain markets - Europe and Japan - both regions had burgeoning 3G networks.
I am sure if they thought there was a huge demand for EDGE in these - its core markets - it would have been incorporated, but there wasn't.
Now that the company has set its sights on EDGE enabled markets we will see more EDGY handsets, but a couple of years ago this wasn't a priority.

@Arne, i know that your highly respected here but i must disagree with months of experience. First please reiterate what version of 3g gives you 2mbps? The first version of 3g is 384kbps download -this is not hspda- just regular 3g. I agree with data rates affected by how many people on a given tower using data or more likely which msc (2,6,9)which more directly affects speed for any given user. In the usa Cingular users in not so congested cities by population compared to Rogers in Canada,consistently get slower rates when the same phone is being used. My 6620 is only a class4 edge device yet when sitting beside 5 others whom have class 6 or 10 phones connected to the same network on the same band i still get 100kbps speed tests done when hooked to a laptop run 4 times in the same time frame & doing streaming video. Here in Canada, Rogers is the only carrier that offers Edge & only on the much stronger 850mhz band that gives coverage so much farther than 1900mhz band. We all knew which tower we were connected to because 3 of us work for Rogers and have access to the switch db to have a list of towers in an area that wont jump any of us onto a nearby tower.
Edge is Ericsson's creation by the way. And is much cheaper to implement; licensing costs and hardware, as its a software upgrade to pure gsm based networks, hardware upgrade to tdma based networks that have converted to gsm. There are roughly 240+ million user on various networks in various markets that are potential sales to SonyEricsson which im sure theyd love to have a piece of. Hence more phones offering it from them. This isnt about 3g vs edge, its about the validity of using or implementing Edge for the end user.

I am on Cingular using an S710. I get 125 - 175 kbps while using it as a modem with my laptop.
I am greatful for EDGE, as it is extremely convenient when I am away from WIFI locations.
I definitely want EDGE on future phones. During a recent business trip, the WIFI in the hotel I was staying in was out of service for a few hours. I pulled out my handy S710 and remained productive for a few hours. It was nothing compared to WIFI, but it beats the hell out of regular dial up connections.
