What are the differences between the physical qualities of the wood planks and the metal girders? Is one stronger, lighter, better under compression etc?

Exactly that. The iron girders are much heavier and can take more load than the wooden planks.

The steel wires are very light and very stong but put up no resistance when being compressed.

Girders version 1.2 has just been released. The main addition to the game is a level editor...

The best thing about the level editor is that the level you've build has its own code which you can pass on to your friends and see if they can pass the level you've designed.
